Director Kabir Khan says a newspaper article first brought Murlikant Petkar’s story to his attention. He initially doubted it could be true; the search that followed—meeting Petkar and his family and consulting people and institutions connected to his life—became the basis for Chandu Champion, Khan’s biographical sports drama starring Kartik Aaryan.
How did Murlikant Petkar’s story come to Kabir Khan?
Khan has described discovering Petkar through a newspaper article. As he recalled in interviews with Scroll and India Today, his first reaction was disbelief: the life described seemed too extraordinary to be true. That uncertainty prompted him to investigate rather than simply take the story at face value.
“It’s not only an incredibly entertaining, engaging and exciting life, but it’s a very important story to tell,” Khan told Scroll. To India Today, he explained why he felt the story warranted a film: “I felt that this story has to be told to this country because it’s a hero that we’ve completely forgotten.” Those are Khan’s reasons for making the film, not a claim that the movie itself is a documentary record.
What research did Khan say he undertook?
Khan told India Today that he met Petkar and spent time with him and his family. He said the scarcity of documentation was one reason direct conversations mattered: “there’s not much documentation about what he did, when he achieved all that.” Khan also said he researched with people associated with Petkar. In his Scroll interview, he further described visits to the Army and meetings with the Olympic committee.
