Amy Adams stars as a mother who pauses her career to care for her young child, then finds that domestic life taking a surreal turn. The trailer’s dog premise is best understood as a possibility in the story—not confirmation of a literal transformation.
What happens in the Nightbitch trailer?
Adams plays a woman known as Mother, a successful artist whose career is on pause while she raises her two-year-old son in the suburbs. As the routines of motherhood reshape her life, she begins experiencing strange bodily changes, craving red meat and wondering whether she is becoming a dog at night. Searchlight’s official film synopsis describes her domestic life taking a surreal turn; AFI FEST’s 2024 description likewise frames the change as something she feels may be happening.

So, does Amy Adams turn into a dog? That phrasing captures the film’s surreal premise, but the official descriptions do not establish the transformation as an unambiguous literal event. The story leaves room for the strange changes to express Mother’s experience of exhaustion, isolation and identity shifting under the pressures of caregiving.
Who made the film, and what is it based on?
Nightbitch was written and directed by Marielle Heller and adapted from Rachel Yoder’s novel. Adams stars alongside Scoot McNairy, Arleigh Snowden, Emmett Snowden, Zoë Chao, Mary Holland, Archana Rajan and Jessica Harper, according to AFI FEST. The festival lists the 2024 US production at 99 minutes.

In an Associated Press interview around the film’s Toronto premiere, Adams described drawing on her own perspective to play Mother: “I just met her where I was at,” she said. “That was me at that time in my life. It wasn’t a transformation that I made for the movie. I just was like: This is who she is. This is who I am, let’s marry the two and let’s be proud.” Heller connected the story’s mythic register to the experience of writing while sleep-deprived: “When you’re sleep deprived, you sort of feel more connected to the mythological world because you’re not in a literal headspace.” Both remarks were reported by The Associated Press.
