American Sports Story Episode 7, “Dirty Pain,” is a scripted dramatization grounded in reporting about Aaron Hernandez—not a documentary transcript. Its official premise sends Hernandez to California for shoulder surgery and a fresh start as paranoia grows. The episode recap connects that arc to reported events, but it does not establish that every private conversation or state of mind shown on screen happened exactly as portrayed.
What happens in Episode 7?
FX’s official synopsis frames “Dirty Pain” around Hernandez’s trip to California for surgery and a new beginning, with his paranoia following him. The Boston Globe’s October 22, 2024 recap describes the episode’s plot in more detail.

Fear of Alexander Bradley
The recap links Hernandez’s fear to the show’s account of him shooting his friend Alexander Bradley, whom the series calls “Sherrod.” Bradley survives and, as shown in the episode, does not identify the shooter to police. The recap says the series depicts threats from Bradley frightening Hernandez, who installs a security system and watches its screens while holding a gun. These details describe what the episode portrays; the recap is not a primary record of each event.
The trade request to Bill Belichick
The episode shows Hernandez traveling to Indianapolis while Patriots coach Bill Belichick is scouting college players. Hernandez asks to be traded, saying he and his family are threatened; Belichick refuses. That exchange is reported as a scene in the episode. The available account does not independently verify the exact words spoken in a private meeting.

California, surgery, and the return to Massachusetts
The Globe recap says the show places Hernandez, his fiancée Shayanna Jenkins, and their daughter temporarily in California while he undergoes surgery on an injured shoulder. It depicts him misusing prescribed pain medication and threatening suicide afterward. On returning to New England, he gets an apartment in Franklin with help from the Patriots; the episode shows him using and storing drugs there and keeping ammunition in the apartment.
Is Episode 7 based on a true story?
Yes, in the sense that the series draws on reporting about Hernandez and on Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc., a podcast from The Boston Globe and Wondery. FX describes American Sports Story as a 10-episode limited series based on that podcast. The Globe also connects the series to its Spotlight reporting. This foundation makes the story reporting-based, but it does not make the scripted scenes a verbatim historical record.

- Factory sealed DVD
Executive producer Brad Simpson described the show’s aim as going beyond familiar headlines. In an Associated Press report published September 25, 2024, he said: “What we tried to do with this show — is take a tabloid headline, take some story that you think you know about Aaron Hernandez … and go behind it and see what it’s like to walk in the shoes of all the people who are part of this.” That statement describes the creative intention, not proof of every scene’s historical accuracy.
What does the show change from what really happened?
The available sources do not provide a verified, scene-by-scene comparison of Episode 7 with primary records. It is therefore not possible to identify specific changes with confidence from these accounts alone. The careful answer is that the episode adapts reported events into a dramatic arc: it condenses events into scenes, stages dialogue, and presents private experience through a narrative frame of fear and attempted escape.

That distinction matters most when a scene depicts what someone privately said, felt, or intended. An episode recap can establish what the show portrayed, but not by itself prove an exchange took place as scripted. Broader coverage of the series also cautions against treating its interpretations of Hernandez’s inner life—or contested explanations involving such subjects as CTE—as settled fact. TIME’s September 17, 2024 analysis discusses those wider portrayal choices; it does not establish a motive for the events dramatized in Episode 7.

When checking a specific scene, separate three questions rather than treating “true story” as a yes-or-no verdict:
Rank #4
- Ages - 1,2,3,4,5,6
- Weight - 0.1875
- Depth - 7.50
- Width - 0.50
- Height - 5.25
- What kind of source supports the claim? An official synopsis describes the premise; a recap describes the episode; underlying reporting or primary records are needed to verify historical details.
- Is the detail externally documented? Observable events and dates may be checkable against reporting or records. A scripted scene alone does not confirm them.
- Is it an event or an interpretation? A move, surgery, or request can be investigated as an event. Fear, motive, and private intent are harder to establish and should not be presented as fact without corroboration.
On that standard, “Dirty Pain” is best understood as a reporting-based dramatization. The episode recap supports what the series depicts; the sources cited here do not verify every scene as a literal account of what happened.
