American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden is a three-episode Netflix documentary series about the decade-long pursuit of Osama bin Laden, from the intelligence work after the September 11, 2001 attacks to the 2011 raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan. It uses archival footage and interviews with people involved in the hunt; it is a documentary account, not a scripted dramatization.
What is American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden about?
Directed by Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan, the series follows the effort to identify and pursue bin Laden after al-Qaida’s September 11 attacks. Netflix describes it as a three-part look at how the world mobilized to find him. The episodes move from the early intelligence investigation, through the loss of the trail after Tora Bora, to the clue in Pakistan that led to the decision to launch the raid known as Operation Neptune Spear.

The story spans roughly a decade, but the series tells it through a compact, three-episode documentary format. Netflix and its Tudum editorial overview describe the production as drawing on rare footage and interviews with CIA insiders, officials, operatives and counterterrorism experts involved in the pursuit.
Is the series a true story?
It is a documentary about real events, not a fictionalized drama. Its central timeline culminates in the Abbottabad raid on May 2, 2011, a date identified in Netflix Tudum’s series overview, published May 14, 2025. The interviews and archival material offer accounts of the investigation and decision-making, but an interview is still testimony: viewers should distinguish what a participant recalls or interprets from facts independently established elsewhere.

How many episodes are there?
Netflix lists three episodes in Season 1, with a total listed runtime of 183 minutes (3 hours, 3 minutes).
| Episode | Netflix-listed runtime | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| A New Kind of Enemy | 59 minutes | Post-9/11 intelligence analysts connect the attacks to al-Qaida and bin Laden. |
| Gloves Are Off | 43 minutes | The pursuit after the Battle of Tora Bora and the continuing al-Qaida threat. |
| Operation Neptune Spear | 1 hour 21 minutes | The Pakistan lead and the U.S. decision to launch the Abbottabad raid. |
Netflix classifies the series as a documentary and rates it TV-MA. Episode titles, runtimes and classification are from Netflix’s 2025 listing.
What happened at Tora Bora in the series?
The second episode treats the Battle of Tora Bora as a turning point in the pursuit: after the battle, investigators lost the trail, while al-Qaida remained a continuing threat. The series uses that period to connect the early post-9/11 investigation with the longer search that followed. Its episode summary does not, by itself, establish every disputed detail about what happened there or who was responsible for each decision.
How did the CIA find bin Laden’s compound?
The series’ final episode centers on a clue in Pakistan and the U.S. decision to proceed with the operation later called Neptune Spear. Netflix’s episode description and Tudum overview establish that broad arc, but the material summarized here does not specify the clue’s full intelligence chain or substantiate every operational detail. Treat the program’s interviews and reconstructions as accounts of the hunt, rather than assuming that each statement is independently verified by the documentary format.

Peter L. Bergen’s Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden from 9/11 to Abbottabad is a useful long-form companion. Penguin Random House describes it as an account of the ten-year pursuit, intelligence work, the Abbottabad compound and Operation Neptune Spear. Its catalog lists an ebook edition from 2012 and a paperback from 2013. The book offers a different format for exploring the same broad subject; it should be read as a separate account, not as proof of every interview claim in the series.
