Why was the American Idol Top 12 announcement delayed?
On the March 30 broadcast, the Top 14 performed during the Songs of Faith episode, and viewers voted to decide which two contestants would leave. The eliminations were not announced at the end of that broadcast.

In a contemporaneous report, American Songwriter quoted host Ryan Seacrest saying, “We will not be announcing the elimination tonight.” He also said, “First time it’s ever happened. Believe me, I’ve been here every night. We want to make sure we get every vote counted.” The report attributed the delay to a volume of 10 million votes. How many votes were cast?
American Songwriter reported that Seacrest cited 10 million votes. That figure is a contemporaneous media report of the host’s statement, not a separate tally published by ABC in the materials available here. ABC confirmed the changed schedule, but did not independently confirm the number.

When did American Idol reveal its Top 12?
