The headline feature in Kindle software version 5.18.3 was for the 2024 Kindle Scribe: readers could press and hold an Active Canvas note, then drag it to a new place on the page. The update was reported on June 16, 2025, and is no longer the current firmware. Amazon’s software page lists newer versions, including 5.19.5 for many recent Kindles, as of August 18, 2026.
What changed in the Kindle Scribe update?
In the June 2025 rollout, the 2024 Kindle Scribe gained a more flexible way to position Active Canvas annotations. Previously, users could resize an Active Canvas note area but had limited ability to move it. With version 5.18.3, a user could press and hold the note, drag it elsewhere on the page, and release it. On-screen arrows indicated available placement points, according to the June 16, 2025 report.
That is a practical editing improvement rather than a change to ordinary reading: move a handwritten note if it covers text, or place it nearer the passage it explains. It can also help when a long note or diagram needs more room on the page.
What Active Canvas does—and what it does not
Active Canvas is a Kindle Scribe annotation feature for writing directly in supported books or documents. The surrounding text flows around the handwritten note, helping keep it associated with the passage rather than putting it in a separate notebook or detached margin. Availability and behavior depend on the book or document and the annotation tools it supports; it is not a guarantee that every Kindle file can be marked up the same way.

- More room to read, write, and think – Just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, with fluid performance and a large 11" display that gives you space to work comfortably.
- Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.
Active Canvas is different from highlighting text, adding a typed note, or writing in a Scribe notebook. Moving a Canvas note does not automatically reorganize other notes, and it does not add handwriting to a standard Kindle, Paperwhite, or Colorsoft. Amazon says handwritten annotations are accessible across Kindle Scribe devices; text-based annotations can sync across Kindle surfaces. See Amazon’s Kindle syncing guidance.
Which Kindles were involved?
The 2025 report associated the 5.18.3 rollout with 11th- and 12th-generation Kindle models, relevant Paperwhite models, Kindle Colorsoft, and Kindle Scribe devices. However, the reported headline feature was Scribe-specific. The report did not identify an equivalent major user-facing feature for the non-Scribe models, and that does not establish that those devices received no other fixes.

| Device group | What the 2025 report establishes |
|---|---|
| 2024 Kindle Scribe | Active Canvas notes could be moved by pressing, holding, and dragging. |
| Other Kindle Scribe models | Included in the reported rollout context, but the report does not establish that every Scribe generation received the same feature. |

Amazon distinguishes models by generation and release, including the 2024 Scribe, Scribe 3rd Generation, Scribe Colorsoft, 12th-generation Paperwhite, and 2024 Kindle. Names such as “Kindle” or “Paperwhite” alone are not enough to identify the right firmware. Amazon’s model identification page also notes that availability can vary by marketplace.

Amazon says Kindle updates are free and usually download and install automatically when the device is connected wirelessly. The full, changing list is on Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page.
How to check your Kindle model and software
- Identify the model: Swipe down from the top of the screen, select All Settings, open Device Options, then select Device Info. Amazon displays the device name and identifying information there.
- Check the installed version: In the same Device Info screen, note the software version, then compare it with the entry for your exact model on Amazon’s update table.
- Check for an update: Connect to Wi-Fi, open All Settings → Device Options, and choose Software Updates if that option is available.
- Sync if needed: From the home screen, open Quick Actions by swiping down, or open the Menu, and select Sync or Sync and Check for Items. Amazon says syncing can retrieve pending books, notes, highlights, and software updates, subject to the device and connection.
If an update does not appear
- Give the rollout time: Software may not appear on every device at once. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and check again later.
- Restart and retry: Restart the Kindle, reconnect to a stable Wi-Fi network, and check for the update again. Keep the device charged while updating.
- Confirm the exact model: Do not install a firmware file based only on a family name. A file for a different generation or regional model may be wrong for your Kindle.
- Use Amazon’s model-specific instructions for manual updates: Amazon provides downloads through its live update page. Follow the instructions for the identified model; some older devices may require intermediate updates.
- Check the document, not just the firmware: If you are looking for Active Canvas controls, test a supported book or document and confirm that you are using the Scribe’s in-book annotation feature rather than notebook tools.
Amazon’s software page provides model-specific downloads and legacy-device guidance. Its device identification page notes that Kindle models and their availability differ by marketplace.

Is this feature a reason to buy a Kindle Scribe?
It is most relevant if you already annotate directly in books or documents and often need to move handwriting away from text. Students, document reviewers, and readers who make longer handwritten notes may value the extra placement control. It remains an incremental improvement to the Scribe’s writing workflow, not a new feature for the whole Kindle line.
For someone who mainly reads novels, a reading-focused Kindle such as a Paperwhite is a more natural fit; the Active Canvas feature does not apply to it. Colorsoft is a separate option for readers who prioritize color content, not a substitute for the Scribe’s writing-first workflow. The Scribe’s larger writing surface makes it more suitable for annotations but less pocketable than a conventional Kindle. This 2025 update alone is not a reason for a standard Kindle owner to upgrade.
