The standalone Comixology app stopped supporting reading on December 4, 2023. Amazon moved the reading experience into Kindle, while eligible purchases remained associated with the Amazon/Comixology account used to buy them. Open the Kindle app or Kindle for Web, use the same account, and follow Amazon’s visibility and account-linking steps before assuming your library is gone.
The original announcement was reported by Engadget. Amazon’s current instructions explain how to expose Comixology books in Kindle, merge legacy accounts, and deliver titles to Kindle e-readers.
What Amazon actually shut down
Amazon retired the standalone Comixology reading app on December 4, 2023. After that date, reading in that app was no longer supported and users were directed to Kindle apps or Kindle for Web.
That did not mean Amazon deleted every purchased comic. The app, the Comixology brand, the storefront, subscriptions, and your purchased library are separate pieces of the service:

| Standalone Comixology app | Kindle app or Kindle for Web |
| Comixology-focused library | Kindle library, with comics and manga filters where available |
| Comixology login | Amazon login, or a legacy Comixology account linked to Amazon |
| Mobile reading in Comixology | Reading in Kindle on supported phones, tablets, browsers, and Fire devices |
| Unclear e-reader behavior | Manual delivery through Amazon’s Content and Devices page |
Amazon’s practical change was ecosystem consolidation: fewer apps for Amazon, but a more general-purpose library for comic readers.
How to recover purchased Comixology books
If you always used an Amazon login
Amazon says a separate account merge is not required when Comixology was always accessed with your Amazon credentials. Use the same Amazon account in Kindle and make Comixology books visible.
- Install or open the Kindle app on your supported device.
- Sign in with the Amazon account used for Comixology purchases.
- Open the Comixology settings page and enable the control to show your Comixology books in Kindle. Amazon’s wording and menu location can vary by app version, marketplace, and account state.
- Return to Kindle and refresh the library by swiping down, or choose More → Sync.
- Search for a known title and allow processing time. Amazon says a large library can take several hours to finish synchronizing.
Books can appear in the cloud library without being downloaded locally. Download a title in Kindle when you want offline reading.

If you used an older Comixology username
A legacy username must be connected to the correct Amazon account through Amazon’s account-merge instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the Comixology account-merge page.
- Sign in with the old Comixology credentials.
- Connect that account to the Amazon login that owns—or should receive—the purchases.
- Open Kindle and refresh or sync the library.
- If the wrong accounts were linked, contact Amazon support with the relevant email addresses and several purchased titles. Do not repeatedly merge accounts or create a new account while troubleshooting.
Reading in a browser
Kindle for Web is useful on a desktop or a device where installing Kindle is inconvenient. Sign in through the Amazon marketplace associated with your account. Amazon’s help documentation specifically presents United States and United Kingdom Kindle for Web paths; catalogs and availability can differ elsewhere.
Why a book may be missing
An empty or incomplete Kindle library usually indicates an account, visibility, synchronization, or delivery problem rather than proof that Amazon erased a purchase. Check these in order:

- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
- Wrong account: compare the Amazon email in Kindle with the account used when the book was bought.
- Unlinked legacy account: complete the Comixology merge flow if you previously signed in with a username.
- Hidden or filtered titles: enable the Comixology visibility setting, search by title, and check comics/manga and hidden-book filters.
- Sync delay: refresh with swipe-down or More → Sync. Very large libraries can take several hours.
- Not downloaded: a cloud entry is not a local copy; tap the title to download it.
- Borrowed rather than purchased: a Comixology Unlimited loan depends on an active subscription and current licensing.
- Device or format limits: a title may display in a phone or tablet app but not be deliverable to a particular Kindle e-reader.

Sending comics to a Kindle e-reader
Comixology titles do not automatically appear on Kindle e-readers merely because they are visible in the Kindle mobile app. Amazon requires manual delivery:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Amazon’s Content and Devices page.
- Select the comic, graphic novel, or manga.
- Choose Deliver and select a registered Kindle device.
- Send a small batch. Amazon recommends fewer than 25 Comixology books at a time because of memory limitations.
- Sync the e-reader and confirm that the title’s format is supported.
Most Kindle e-readers use monochrome screens, so they are better suited to black-and-white manga or text-heavy graphic novels than color artwork. Storage, page size, fixed-layout behavior, pop-ups, and virtual-panel support vary by Kindle generation. Amazon documents those format differences in its comic and manga format guide.

What changed for reading quality and organization
Kindle can display comics, but it is not a like-for-like replacement for a comic-only interface. Purchased comics share a general Kindle library unless you filter them, and discovery may feel less specialized than it did in Comixology.
- Use the Comics & Manga filter when it is available in your Kindle experience.
- Hidden titles can be recovered through Kindle’s hidden-items view.
- Fixed-layout pages, image pop-ups, and virtual panels are supported differently across iOS, Android, Fire tablets, Kindle for Web, and e-ink Kindles.
- A reading presentation that works on a phone or tablet may be less comfortable—or unavailable—on an e-reader.
Do not assume that every former Comixology feature disappeared, or that every title has identical Guided View behavior. The result depends on the book’s format and the platform running Kindle.

Comixology Unlimited
The migration was intended to let subscribers browse and borrow eligible comics, graphic novels, and manga through Kindle. A loan is not ownership: access can end when the subscription ends or when a publisher removes a title from the catalog. Selection varies by country, marketplace, licensing, and membership status.

Buying comics now
Purchases generally happen through Amazon’s website or its digital-book storefront rather than inside the iOS Kindle app. Reading then happens in Kindle or Kindle for Web. Availability differs by publisher, issue, region, and marketplace; do not assume that every Comixology title is sold in every country.
Kindle Unlimited is separate
Kindle Unlimited is a different subscription from Comixology Unlimited. Amazon’s About Amazon page listed a U.S. price of $11.99 per month plus taxes on August 18, 2026; verify the live checkout price because subscriptions change. A subscription catalog is never a guarantee that a specific comic will remain available.
Choosing a reading option
| Option | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle iOS or Android app | Existing Amazon/Comixology purchases across common devices | General book library and platform-specific comic features |
| Kindle for Web | Desktop reading without installing an app | Browser navigation may be less comfortable for panel-heavy pages |
| Kindle e-reader | Black-and-white manga, battery life, distraction-free reading | Monochrome display, manual delivery, storage and format limits |
| Fire tablet | Color screen and Amazon integration | Hardware varies; some competing services do not support Fire tablets |
| Marvel Unlimited | Marvel-focused subscription reading | Not a home for Amazon/Comixology purchases; catalog is primarily Marvel |
| DC UNIVERSE INFINITE | DC-focused subscription catalog | DC says Comixology purchases do not transfer; service is not supported on Fire tablets |
| Hoopla or Libby | Borrowing comics through a participating library | Local membership, licensing, and catalog determine availability |
Do not confuse Comixology with Marvel or DC app migrations
Publisher services have separate account systems. Marvel said purchases made in the Marvel Comics app before its 2023 shutdown could move to Marvel Unlimited under Marvel’s own program; that does not automatically cover Marvel books bought through Amazon or Comixology. See Marvel’s migration explanation.
DC’s help center explicitly says Comixology purchases do not appear in DC UNIVERSE INFINITE. Its supported-platform guidance is at this DC article and its platform list.
Bottom line for former Comixology readers
Amazon did not announce a new 2026 shutdown: the standalone Comixology app already stopped supporting reading on December 4, 2023. Use the Kindle app or Kindle for Web with the correct Amazon account, merge an older Comixology username when necessary, refresh the library, and redownload titles as needed. Kindle e-readers require separate delivery, and comic presentation varies by device. Your purchased books are intended to remain tied to the associated account, but borrowed books, publisher apps, regional catalogs, and device formats follow different rules.
