Amazon reorganized Wondery’s podcast operation in August 2025, with Reuters reporting that about 110 roles were affected. That was not a verified count of employees fired: many workers were expected to move to other Amazon teams. Amazon said Wondery was not shutting down. Instead, it moved audio-first narrative podcasts toward Audible and kept creator-led programming under the Wondery brand. By July 2026, the Wondery app and Wondery+ subscription had ended, but Amazon still described Wondery as a podcast studio.
What changed in the August 2025 reorganization?
Reuters reported on August 4, 2025, that Amazon was restructuring Wondery’s podcast operation and that about 110 roles were affected. The figure came from a memo and an Amazon statement reported by Reuters; the story said many employees would transfer to other parts of Amazon. It should not be read as a precise final count of people whose employment ended. Reuters’ report also said Wondery CEO Jen Sargent would depart after a transition period.
The operating change divided work that had been handled within Wondery’s podcast operation. Audio-first narrative titles, including Business Wars, were moved to Audible, while creator-led shows were consolidated in a separate unit and continued under the Wondery brand. Amazon told TechCrunch it was not shutting Wondery and said the narrative podcast teams were being combined with Audible. TechCrunch’s report of Amazon’s response describes the distinction.
Why did Amazon separate narrative and creator-led shows?
Amazon’s stated rationale was that podcasting had changed, especially with the growth of video-forward, creator-led programming. The company said: “The podcast landscape has evolved significantly in the past few years, particularly with the rise of video-forward, creator-led content.” That is Amazon’s explanation for its organizational choice, not independent proof that this format caused the restructuring.

A memo from Amazon audio executive Steve Boom, as reported by Reuters, argued that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth, and monetization strategies from audio-first narrative series. This describes the company’s reported reasoning; the available accounts do not independently establish the relative performance or profitability of either category.
What happened to Wondery after the reorganization?
Amazon’s later actions show why the 2025 change should not be confused with a shutdown of the studio. On April 27, 2026, Amazon and Harpo Entertainment announced a multi-year agreement giving Wondery exclusive distribution and advertising rights for The Oprah Podcast across audio and video. The announcement establishes later Wondery-branded activity, but does not disclose the studio’s staffing levels or internal reporting lines. Amazon’s announcement describes the deal.

In an update dated July 6, 2026, Amazon said the Wondery app and Wondery+ subscription were no longer available, while identifying Wondery as a podcast studio known for creator-led shows. The consumer listening product and the studio are distinct: ending the app and subscription did not mean that Wondery stopped producing or distributing podcasts. The public accounts do not provide a final count of employees who left Amazon rather than transferring to other teams, a complete current organization chart, or an independently audited explanation of Wondery’s financial performance. Amazon’s July 2026 description confirms continued studio activity, but does not establish that internal reporting lines remained exactly as announced in 2025.

Amazon’s October 2025 company-wide workforce message discussed broad organizational changes, including “reducing layers, increasing ownership, and helping reduce bureaucracy.” That update was not a Wondery-specific explanation and should not be treated as the stated cause of the podcast reorganization.
