Announced on March 5, 2025, the test covered 12 licensed movies and series that previously lacked dubbed versions, with English and Latin American Spanish tracks made through a process Amazon described as AI-aided and subject to localization-professional quality control. Later reports of criticized anime tracks—and the removal or scaling back of some—show why the distinction between an optional experiment and a finished dub matters.
What Amazon announced
Amazon said Prime Video was starting an AI-aided dubbing pilot in cooperation with Amazon MGM Studios technology leadership. The initial test covered 12 licensed movies and series in select countries and territories. Its stated purpose was to make more international content accessible to viewers who might otherwise have no dubbed option. Amazon executive Raf Soltanovich, then vice president of technology for Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, described the effort as a way to extend access to titles that otherwise would not be dubbed. Amazon’s March 5, 2025 announcement says localization professionals would work with AI and provide quality control.

- Eligibility: Amazon said the titles had no dubbing support before the test.

Which titles were named?
Amazon identified El Cid: La Leyenda, Mi Mamá Lora, and Long Lost as examples. The announcement’s accessible text did not name the other nine titles, so these three should not be treated as the complete pilot catalog. Nor does the initial list establish which tracks remain available now: audio options can vary by title, territory, and date.
What “AI-aided” means—and what Amazon did not specify
Amazon’s wording matters. It described AI working alongside localization professionals, not a fully automated system replacing every stage of conventional dubbing. Dubbing is more than translating dialogue: it involves adaptation, timing, performance, direction, pronunciation, recording or speech generation, mixing, and quality checks. A technically understandable translation can still sound wrong if the voice misses a character’s age or personality, a joke’s timing, or a scene’s emotional intent.

The announcement did not identify a model or speech vendor, explain whether any existing performer’s voice was cloned, set out how much human review each title received, or disclose rules for performer payment and credit. It also did not detail whether timing, lip synchronization, or emotional direction were automated. Those specifics cannot be inferred from the term “AI-aided.”
How viewers may recognize and switch from an AI track
In later tests, some viewers reportedly found separate audio options labeled “English (AI beta)” or “Spanish (AI beta).” Ars Technica reported those labels during coverage of the anime controversy; they are not evidence of a universal labeling policy for every title or Prime Video app. In at least some reported cases, the AI track was an additional choice rather than a silent replacement for the original audio.

- Start playback and open the title’s audio and subtitles menu. The exact control name and location vary by device and app version.
- Choose the original-language audio, subtitles, or another available dub if the beta performance is not working for you.
- If you report a problem through Prime Video’s support or feedback options, include the title, episode, track language, and approximate timestamp. That makes a pronunciation or translation issue easier to identify.
Track availability can differ by country because licensing is territorial, and an option may change during a test. A title can also have an AI beta track in one market while retaining its original audio and subtitles.
Why test AI dubbing on these titles?
Amazon’s stated rationale was broader language access for content that might not otherwise receive dubbing. A reasonable business inference is that AI-assisted workflows could make some catalog titles less costly or quicker to localize, expanding the pool of works that merit a dub. Amazon did not publish a cost or turnaround figure, so the size of any savings—and whether they are passed into more or better localization—has not been established.

For viewers who prefer spoken translation or cannot comfortably read subtitles, an additional audio track can make a title easier to follow. Subtitles preserve the original vocal performance but require reading; dubbing offers translated speech, with the trade-off that the new performance must carry character, humor, register, and emotional tone as well as meaning. Dubbing is distinct from captions and audio description, which serve different accessibility needs.
Why the anime tracks drew criticism
Ars Technica reported in December 2025 that AI-generated English and Spanish anime dubs appeared on titles including Banana Fish and No Game, No Life: Zero. Viewers criticized performances they found unnatural and emotionally flat. Some of the titles already had human-produced dubs, sharpening the objection to adding synthetic versions in those cases. Ars later reported that Amazon removed or scaled back at least some disputed tracks.

That account does not establish that every criticized track was handled the same way, that the entire dubbing effort ended, or that all of the later anime tracks belonged to the original 12-title pilot. It does show that a human quality-control step, as described in the 2025 announcement, does not by itself tell viewers what review occurred or guarantee that the result will meet their expectations.
Problems can be especially noticeable in emotionally intense scenes, comedy, songs, accents, overlapping speech, or dialogue-heavy animation. A track may convey the literal words while flattening emphasis, mispronouncing names, missing idiom, or making a character sound unlike themselves. That is why intelligibility and performance quality are separate tests.

What the pilot leaves unanswered for workers and rights holders
Traditional dubbing can involve translators, dialogue adapters, directors, engineers, studios, and voice performers. AI may create review and correction work while reducing demand for some recording or performance tasks; the balance is not established for this pilot. The public announcement does not explain consent procedures, compensation, attribution, residuals, or whether contracts allowed synthetic performances.
Several rights questions also remain open: whether each title’s license expressly covered AI-generated dubbing; whether original producers, distributors, studios, or performers were consulted; who supplied the technology; who owns the resulting audio; and whether a rights holder can require a track’s removal. These are questions raised by the format, not evidence that a particular party’s rights were violated.
How this differs from Prime Video’s other AI features
AI dubbing creates translated spoken-language audio; it is not the same as AI-based content discovery or dialogue enhancement. Amazon has separately described AI Topics for finding titles and Dialogue Boost for making speech clearer in audio. Neither feature, as described in those sources, supplies a dubbed performance in another language.
