Amazon announced Maestro, an AI-assisted playlist feature for Amazon Music, on April 16, 2024. It turns typed or spoken prompts—including moods, activities, musical eras and emojis—into playlists of existing catalog tracks; it does not compose new songs. The beta initially reached a subset of U.S. customers using the iOS and Android apps, and the listening terms differed by plan.
What Amazon released
Maestro was announced as a beta for creating Amazon Music playlists from natural-language prompts. Rather than choose from a fixed list of genres or moods, a listener could describe a specific scene or combination of ideas. Amazon’s examples included “crying and eating pasta” and “MySpace-era hip-hop.” The playlist consists of music already available in Amazon Music, not newly generated recordings. Amazon’s April 16, 2024 announcement described the feature and its initial rollout.
That distinction matters: “AI-generated playlist” refers to selecting and organizing existing tracks in response to a prompt. It is a discovery and curation tool, not a text-to-music generator. Amazon has not publicly detailed the model, training data, or track-ranking logic in the cited announcement.

At launch, Amazon said it was rolling Maestro out to a subset of customers in the United States across Amazon Music Free, Prime, and Unlimited. The initial beta was in the Amazon Music apps for iOS and Android. The announcement did not establish desktop, web, television, car, or smart-speaker availability, nor did it provide a specific minimum app version beyond referring users to the latest app.

A later Amazon overview of Amazon Music refers to Maestro across the service’s tiers. That does not establish that every account in every country or on every device has access. If the option is missing, access may depend on rollout, region, account, or app state; the sources do not give a complete current availability map.
How to create a prompt-based playlist
These are the steps in Amazon’s launch instructions; labels or placement may have changed since the beta began.

- Open the latest Amazon Music app on an iOS or Android device.
- Look for Maestro on the home screen, or tap the plus sign used to create a playlist.
- Type or speak a playlist idea. You can also use suggested prompts or emojis.
- Submit the prompt with “Let’s go!”
- Review the playlist, then stream, save, or share it if the options available to your account allow.
Prompts that suit Maestro
Amazon described prompts built around emotions, activities, occasions, eras, sounds, and emoji combinations. The idea is to express a listening context, not just name a genre. Examples below illustrate the range; they are not guarantees of particular results.
- Mood: “melancholy but hopeful.”
- Activity: “music for a late-night drive.”
- Era: “early-2000s indie.”
- Combination: “upbeat jazz for cooking dinner.”
- Scenario: “music my grandparents made out to.”
- Emoji: a desert or cowboy-themed emoji combination, or emojis suggesting singing in the shower.
Amazon’s own examples ranged from “MySpace-era hip-hop” to “crying and eating pasta,” showing how a prompt can combine time, style, mood, and situation. The more unusual the request, the more the result depends on how Maestro interprets it.

What the plan differences meant at launch
Amazon’s April 2024 announcement distinguished access to Maestro from unrestricted playback. Its beta terms described the following experience:

These are the terms in Amazon’s launch description, not a guarantee that every account’s current playback rules are identical. Seeing Maestro does not necessarily mean a Free or Prime account can play an entire playlist on demand. If previews are enough to experiment with prompts, an upgrade may not be necessary just to try the feature; unrestricted listening was the distinction Amazon made for Unlimited at launch.

When a playlist misses the mark
Amazon warned that Maestro was new and would not always get a prompt right the first time. A broad mood can yield a loosely related mix; an era request may surface neighboring sounds; and an emoji can function more like a thematic hint than a precise instruction. Unexpected artists or genres do not necessarily mean the prompt was ignored.

Try a revised prompt that adds a decade, genre, energy level, activity, or preferred artists. You can also state exclusions or whether you want clean lyrics. These are practical ways to make the request more specific, not documented guarantees about how the system will respond. If the result remains unsuitable, try a different or shorter prompt, or build the playlist manually when exact track selection matters.

Other common issues have straightforward explanations:
- Maestro is missing: The account may not be in the rollout, or the feature may not be available in that region or app context.
- A prompt is blocked: Amazon said it used safeguards intended to block offensive language and inappropriate prompts; those controls should not be treated as foolproof.
- Expected songs do not appear: The playlist draws on Amazon Music’s catalog and its interpretation of the prompt, so a particular track is not assured.
- A playlist only previews: That matches the Free and Prime behavior described for the launch beta.
What Maestro changes—and what it does not
Maestro’s distinctive idea was conversational discovery: describe a listening situation in ordinary language instead of starting with a genre, artist, or pre-made playlist. That can be useful when the listener has a vivid idea but not a track list. It also gives the system room to interpret the request, which makes results less predictable than hand-picking songs.
Manual playlist creation remains the better fit when exact tracks, exclusions, order, artist balance, or reliable suitability for a public event matter. Amazon’s announcement does not explain why individual songs are selected, so users should treat a generated playlist as a starting point rather than an explainable or precisely controllable recommendation.
