Quick answer: Amazon Music’s prompt-based playlist tool is called Maestro. Amazon announced it on April 16, 2024, as a beta for a subset of U.S. Free, Prime and Unlimited customers on iOS and Android. It is not documented as a brand-new worldwide launch in August 2026. Amazon has since added AI-powered search and Alexa+ music controls, while Spotify has expanded its own beta AI tools.
What Amazon Music actually launched
Maestro turns a natural-language idea into a playlist by selecting tracks from Amazon Music’s catalog. It does not compose new songs or function as a general-purpose music generator. Amazon’s announcement described prompts based on moods, activities, genres, eras, sounds, emojis and highly specific situations.

That history matters. A headline saying the feature “goes live” can make an older, limited beta sound like a newly released global product. The primary announcement does not establish universal availability across countries, account types, devices or subscription plans as of August 2026.

How to create a Maestro playlist
- Update or install the Amazon Music app on an iOS or Android phone.
- Look for Maestro on the home screen, or tap the plus sign used to create a new playlist.
- Type or speak a request. For example: “Upbeat 1990s pop for a 30-minute commute” or “French-language electronic music with a calm start.”
- Tap “Let’s go!”
- Review the generated playlist, then stream it. Depending on the account and playback rights, you may be able to save and share it.
Other useful prompts can specify an activity, language, decade, energy level, exclusions or approximate duration: “Warm acoustic songs for cooking dinner, no live versions” is more actionable than simply asking for “good songs.” These examples illustrate prompt formats; they are not claimed test results.
Who can use Maestro, and what can they play?
Amazon’s launch terms separated creation and playback rights:

Later Amazon pages describe Maestro as available across Amazon Music tiers, but that wording does not prove that every customer in every country has access. An updated app may still lack the feature because availability can be account-based or region-based. Prime membership also does not automatically mean an account is subscribed to Unlimited.

Amazon’s newer announcements make it important not to collapse several products into one name.

Alexa+ can overlap with Maestro’s results, but Amazon has not said that Alexa+ replaced Maestro. The most accurate description is an expanding set of AI discovery experiences.

Amazon Music versus Spotify’s AI tools
Spotify remains the closest comparison, but neither service’s current offering should be treated as a universally available, finished product.

Spotify reported the Prompted Playlist expansion in its April 28, 2026 update: Spotify Q1 2026 earnings. On July 14, 2026, Spotify separately announced a Talk to Spotify beta for eligible Premium users aged 18 and over in the United States, Ireland and Sweden, in English on iOS and Android. What to do when the AI gets the playlist wrong
Amazon warned that the technology was new and might not get the result right on the first try. Catalog licensing, unavailable recordings, explicit-content settings and voice-recognition errors can all affect the output.
- Generic result: Add a decade, language, activity, energy level or artist type.
- Wrong content: Add exclusions such as “no explicit lyrics,” “no live versions” or “avoid artists I already played.”
- Misheard voice request: Type unusual artist names, lyrics or foreign-language terms instead.
- Missing tracks: The recording may not be licensed in your market or playable on your tier.
- Bad duration or workout fit: Treat the time or tempo as a preference, not a guarantee.
- Playlist still unsuitable: Generate a new one, then manually remove tracks before saving.
If Maestro does not appear, update the app, confirm the account’s country and check whether the rollout includes that account. An app update alone cannot prove eligibility.

Does Maestro require Amazon Music Unlimited?
No. Amazon’s original announcement included Free, Prime and Unlimited customers in the beta. Unlimited primarily changes what happens after a playlist is created: it provides full on-demand listening and offline downloads in the U.S., while lower tiers may impose previews, advertising, shuffle or other playback limits.

Is Amazon really taking on Spotify?
“Taking on Spotify” is reasonable competitive framing, not proof of customer switching, superior engagement or higher market share. Maestro gives Amazon a comparable prompt-based discovery feature, but the evidence does not establish a worldwide rollout, cross-device parity, better recommendations or a lower total cost.
Amazon’s practical advantages can matter more than the AI itself:

- Potential value for households already using Amazon speakers or related services.
Spotify’s counteradvantages include an established personalization system, a large playlist culture, social features, Prompted Playlist and conversational tools spanning music and other audio. Both companies are still rolling out beta or eligibility-limited experiences.

Try Amazon Music first if you already have Prime
Prime members can test whether the catalog, playback limits and AI tools fit their listening before adding Unlimited. Upgrade only if previews or on-demand restrictions matter.
Stay with Spotify if your library is deeply invested there
Long listening history, shared playlists, social connections and Spotify-specific integrations can outweigh a similar prompt feature. Check whether your account qualifies for Prompted Playlist or Talk to Spotify.
Consider Amazon if Alexa or audio quality is central
Listeners with Alexa households or a strong interest in Amazon’s HD and spatial-audio offering may value the ecosystem even if Maestro remains limited.
Do not switch solely for AI playlists
AI playlist creation is a poor sole reason to change services if you rarely make playlists, need dependable access on every device, require exact prompt compliance or are choosing mainly on price. Compare regional plans, family rules, simultaneous streams, catalog coverage and portability of your existing library.

Verdict
Amazon has a credible Spotify-style AI playlist feature, but the supported claim is narrower than the headline: Maestro began as a limited U.S. beta on April 16, 2024. Amazon’s later AI search and Alexa+ announcements show a broader strategy, while Spotify continues to develop Prompted Playlist and conversational discovery. In 2026, Maestro is best viewed as part of an evolving feature race—not a documented new global launch or proof that Amazon has displaced Spotify.

Does Maestro generate original music?
No. Maestro selects existing songs from Amazon Music’s catalog and arranges them into a playlist; it is not a system for composing new recordings.
Why can’t I see Maestro after updating the app?

Yes. If both services are available to you, use the same prompts on each and compare catalog coverage, playback limits and how much manual editing the results require before making a subscription decision.
