What the 2024 report found
On March 28, 2024, Futurism reporter Frank Landymore reported seeing ads for books he regarded as plainly AI-generated on Kindle devices, including lock screens. The article also recounted complaints from Kindle users and showed examples of titles and covers the reporter described as apparently AI-generated. It said some titles seemed to imitate existing works, including a book the reporter characterized as an imitation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Those are the article’s observations and judgments; it did not document independent verification of how every book was made. Read the March 28, 2024 Futurism report.
The report described ads displacing other recommendations on the reporter’s Kindle for periods of time, and quoted user frustration. These accounts show that some readers encountered the ads; they do not establish a platform-wide pattern or a prevalence rate. The article did not determine how the ads were selected. Suggestions in the report about sellers manipulating algorithms or Amazon manually favoring books were speculation, not confirmed explanations.
What Amazon said it did
Futurism reported that an unnamed Amazon spokesperson said the company had removed the books the outlet identified. The spokesperson also said: “All books in the store must adhere to our content guidelines, regardless of how the content was created,” and that Amazon works to prevent noncompliant books from being listed and removes them when found. The response was reported in March 2024 and applies to the books Futurism identified; it does not establish that every similar book was removed or that the issue cannot recur.

Amazon’s reported response also said ads must meet Amazon Advertising Guidelines and Acceptance policies. That statement does not explain why the particular ads appeared on the devices in the article.
How Amazon distinguishes AI-generated from AI-assisted books
Amazon KDP’s Content Guidelines, accessed September 30, 2026, distinguish between AI-generated content and AI-assisted work. The disclosure is made to Amazon when a publisher publishes or republishes a book; the guidance cited here does not say that readers will see a public AI label on product pages or ads. The distinction does not remove publishers’ responsibility to follow Amazon’s content and intellectual-property rules. Disclosure to KDP should not be confused with an on-screen notice for Kindle shoppers.
Why these ads appear on Kindle screens
Amazon says that on devices that include ads, sponsored screensavers appear on both the lock and home screens. Its UK customer-service page describes personalized advertising as one way some device models can be offered at a subsidized price. This is an ad-supported device feature, not an advertisement displayed inside the text of an ebook. Amazon UK’s Kindle and Fire tablet ads help page confirms the placement; it does not identify the selection process behind the ads in Futurism’s 2024 report or establish the settings and charges available in every country.

On April 24, 2026, Amazon Ads announced that US self-service advertisers could buy Kindle eReader lock-screen placements through Amazon DSP open auction to promote their ebooks. Read the Amazon Ads announcement. This later buying option is not evidence of how the ads in the 2024 report were purchased, and it does not explain their selection or establish that the books shown then used this campaign type.

Can you stop AI-generated book ads on a Kindle?
The cited 2024 reporting and Amazon help page do not establish a setting that filters ads by whether a book was made with AI. The help page confirms where sponsored screens can appear, but device options and any ad-removal terms may vary by model and country. Check Amazon’s current support information for your specific Kindle and region before changing settings or paying to remove ads; the 2024 report’s US pricing should not be treated as current.
