Much of that programming moved into Prime Video, where people can watch selected free movies, shows and live channels alongside Prime-included titles and paid options. You do not need Prime for every free title; you do need to distinguish free-with-ads programming from content included with a membership.
What happened to Freevee?
Amazon announced in November 2024 that it would phase out the Freevee brand. The standalone app was reported to remain available until August 2025, when users were directed to Prime Video. That date refers to the separate app, not the disappearance of all free programming. Amazon said non-Prime customers would continue to have access through Prime Video to a broad selection of free, ad-supported movies, series, selected Amazon MGM Originals and free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels. The Los Angeles Times reported the brand phase-out; TheWrap reported on the standalone app and continuing catalog.

How the change unfolded
- April 2022: Amazon rebranded IMDb TV as Amazon Freevee. Amazon Ads introduced the new name.
- Early 2024: Amazon began introducing limited ads on Prime Video in major markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada. Amazon announced the ad rollout.
- November 2024: Amazon said it would phase out Freevee branding, while continuing a broad selection of free programming in Prime Video. The Los Angeles Times covered the decision.
- August 2025: The standalone Freevee app was reported to be ending. PCWorld reported the app timing.
- March 2026: Amazon announced Prime Video Ultra, a U.S. upgrade for ad-free viewing of eligible Prime Video content. Amazon published its plan details.
Where to find former Freevee programming
Look in Prime Video for titles marked as free or free with ads. Prime Video now brings together programming included with Prime, free ad-supported titles, rentals and purchases, and separately paid channel subscriptions. The exact labels and layout can vary by device, app version and market. Amazon describes the service as offering both free ad-supported viewing and paid options on its entertainment overview.
“Included with Prime” means a title is part of the membership benefit, subject to regional availability and service terms. “Watch for Free” or “free with ads” means you can view it without paying for that title, but advertising supports it. A rental or purchase is a separate transaction; an add-on channel requires its own subscription. Check the title’s listing before pressing play, especially when searching for a movie or show you remember from Freevee.

Not every old title is guaranteed to remain
Amazon promised a broad continuing selection, not that every Freevee movie, series or original would stay available unchanged. Selected originals and licensed titles may continue as free-with-ads programming; other shows can move to a different tier, conclude, rotate out or disappear as rights and programming decisions change. A title’s former Freevee label does not guarantee its future availability.
What non-Prime viewers can watch
Prime membership is not required for all free programming in Prime Video. Nonmembers can watch titles offered in the free, ad-supported catalog and access FAST channels where those offerings are available. Amazon’s Prime Video overview for customers describes free ad-supported options alongside paid subscriptions and transactions. Catalogs and access vary by country, device and licensing rights.

For a former Freevee viewer, the practical change is the destination: use Prime Video rather than a separate Freevee app. A Prime account is not the same thing as a Prime membership; whether a particular title is free, included with Prime or separately paid should be clear on its listing.
What changes for Prime members—and what ads remain
Prime Video includes a Prime catalog, but the same app also displays free-with-ads titles and content that costs extra. Seeing a title in Prime Video does not mean it is included in Prime, and membership alone does not make free-tier programming ad-free. Amazon introduced ads on ordinary Prime Video programming in 2024; its announcement named the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Canada as initial markets. See Amazon’s announcement.

Prime Video Ultra is not an all-content ad remover
Amazon announced Prime Video Ultra in the United States on March 13, 2026, at $4.99 per month, with a $45.99 annual option for annual Prime members. Amazon’s announcement listed U.S. Prime membership at $14.99 per month or $139 per year at that time; prices and eligibility can change. Ultra removes ads from eligible Prime Video content, but Amazon says live television, sports and some other ad-supported content may still include advertising. Free programming remains an ad-supported tier, and third-party channel subscriptions follow their own terms. Check Amazon’s current Ultra details before subscribing.
Ultra may be unnecessary if most of your viewing is free-with-ads programming, live events that can still carry ads, or third-party channels. Consider it only if its eligible ad-free catalog and other included features match what you watch; it is not a way to remove ads from every item surfaced in Prime Video.

Why Amazon is consolidating free and paid video
Amazon presents Prime Video as a single entertainment destination for Prime programming, free ad-supported viewing, live channels, rentals, purchases and add-on subscriptions. Bringing those options into one app can make discovery simpler and reduce the need to move between separate Amazon video brands. That is a reasonable inference from the product design, not a published statement of every internal business motive. Amazon’s interface announcement describes the combined experience.
The consolidation also puts free viewing inside the same environment as Prime Video advertising. Amazon Ads reported that Prime Video had an average monthly ad-supported reach of more than 130 million U.S. customers in 2025, and that an average of 88% of U.S. Prime Video viewers had shopped on Amazon. Those are Amazon-reported figures, not independent audience measurements. Amazon Ads also describes interactive and shoppable ad formats, including formats that can surface product information; availability and capabilities depend on placement, market and campaign.

Reporting on the Freevee decision said its executives and content teams were expected to be integrated elsewhere within Amazon, including work connected to Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. That is reported organizational context, not a complete official account of Amazon’s staffing decisions. The Los Angeles Times covered that reporting.
What the move means for advertisers
For advertisers, Freevee’s retirement as a brand does not mean Amazon abandoned ad-supported streaming inventory. It places free programming within a broader Prime Video environment that also carries ads on eligible Prime programming. Amazon Ads’ audience and shopping-overlap figures suggest the company is selling the combination of streaming reach and Amazon commerce signals; those claims should be understood as Amazon’s own reporting.
Advertisers weighing a campaign should assess the audience and placements they can actually buy, targeting and measurement terms, market availability, and whether interactive or shoppable formats suit their goals. Amazon describes features such as real-time product details for some ad formats, but that does not establish that every campaign, device or placement supports them. A larger unified destination can simplify access, but it does not by itself tell advertisers how inventory, costs or outcomes compare with other services.
What viewers gain—and what may be less convenient
- One destination: Prime Video combines free and paid viewing options, including live channels, rentals and subscriptions.
- Free access without Prime: Nonmembers can still watch free-with-ads titles where offered.
- More to check before playback: A Prime Video listing may be included, free with ads, a rental or purchase, or part of a separate channel subscription.
- Less certainty about an old favorite: Licensing and programming changes mean a former Freevee title may rotate out or move between access categories.
- No guarantee of ad-free viewing from one upgrade: Ultra applies to eligible content, with exceptions for some live and ad-supported programming.
If you only want free television, compare Prime Video’s free catalog with services such as Tubi, Pluto TV or The Roku Channel. Library services such as Kanopy or Hoopla may also be available through participating libraries. Catalogs, advertising, account requirements, devices and geographic availability differ; this is not a ranking of those services.
