For a simple setup that sends one continuous video feed to YouTube, compare the price and reliability of equivalent servers—not the cost of serving every viewer. YouTube handles transcoding for viewers; a separate AWS media-and-delivery architecture is a different, more complex workload.
The right choice depends on whether you need a virtual machine you will operate yourself, how much traffic it sends to YouTube, and what recovery and monitoring you build around it. If you want an alternative that avoids maintaining a server, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud.
What are you comparing: an ingest server or a delivery platform?
A cloud server can run an encoder or relay that sends a single feed to YouTube. In that ingest-only design, the VM is not sending a separate copy to each viewer. YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. That distinction matters: do not apply viewer-count bandwidth estimates to an ingest-only VM unless it also serves viewers through a separate delivery setup.
AWS also documents a broader live-video architecture: an encoder feeds AWS Elemental MediaLive, then storage or packaging through MediaStore or MediaPackage, and CloudFront distributes the stream to viewers. AWS describes a 24/7 live channel as a supported pattern. It is not synonymous with running an encoder on EC2, and it is not automatically necessary when YouTube is the destination.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For an ingest-only comparison, evaluate EC2 and Hetzner Cloud as server providers. For a system that delivers video directly to viewers, account separately for packaging, CDN distribution, and their associated costs.
Amazon EC2 vs Hetzner Cloud: what differs for this use?
| Factor | Amazon EC2 | Hetzner Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Role in a simple YouTube setup | Can run an encoder or relay sending one feed to YouTube. A larger AWS live-delivery design may add MediaLive, MediaStore or MediaPackage, and CloudFront. | Can be used as a cloud server for an encoder or relay sending one feed to YouTube. |
| Compute selection | Instance requirements depend on whether the server encodes, and on codec, resolution, and frame rate. No specific instance is established here as a real-time encoding match. | Server requirements depend on the same workload factors. No specific plan is established here as a real-time encoding match. |
| Internet transfer out | AWS states that 100 GB per month of internet transfer out is free in aggregate across eligible services and regions, subject to exclusions. Beyond that, charges depend on applicable tiers and region. | The product page advertises included traffic; the amount relevant to a specific plan and location should be checked before purchase. |
| Availability evidence | A comparable EC2 commitment is not established here. Check the applicable service terms and design recovery separately. | Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer Service Agreement describes a 99.9% monthly Cloud Server availability effort, subject to its definitions and exclusions. It is not an end-to-end YouTube channel guarantee. |
| Best fit to investigate | Consider when you want to build around AWS compute or may need its separate media and delivery services. Cost those services separately from EC2. | Consider when a cloud VM with advertised included traffic fits your design; verify the precise plan, region, and allowance for your workload. |
Neither provider can be declared the cheaper option without matching the configuration and billing assumptions. AWS instance charges vary by instance, operating system, region, and runtime; data transfer out is a separate consideration. Hetzner advertises included traffic, but the available figures do not establish a matched current price for the same region and server specification.
Which cloud is cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
First pin down the workload. Compare the same region where possible, CPU and RAM, operating system, storage, monthly runtime, stream bitrate, transfer allowance, and recovery design. If one VM encodes while the other only relays, the comparison is not like-for-like. The source location and YouTube ingest path may also inform region selection, but no latency advantage for either provider is established here.

Use AWS transfer pricing carefully
AWS describes 100 GB of monthly internet transfer out as free in aggregate across eligible AWS services and regions, not as a separate allowance for every EC2 instance. The allowance has exclusions, including China and GovCloud. In the retrieved Ohio pricing table, outbound internet transfer was listed at $0.09 per GB for the first 10 TB per month, then $0.085 per GB for the next 40 TB, $0.07 per GB for the following 100 TB, and $0.05 per GB above 150 TB. These are regional pricing-table figures, not a global rate; verify the current rate for your region before calculating a budget.

For a continuously pushed feed, a useful first estimate is: bitrate in megabits per second Ă· 8 Ă— seconds streamed Ă· 1,000 to estimate decimal gigabytes, then add room for audio and protocol overhead. At 12 Mbps for 30 days without interruption, the video payload alone is approximately 3,888 GB: 12 Ă· 8 Ă— 2,592,000 Ă· 1,000. This is an estimate, not a provider bill; actual transfer and billing depend on stream settings, overhead, and the provider’s accounting.
That calculation describes the server-to-YouTube feed in an ingest-only setup. It does not scale with the channel’s viewer count unless the server or another service is also distributing video to viewers. If viewers receive the stream through your own origin or a CDN, model that delivery separately.

Do not confuse EC2 cost with AWS live-delivery cost
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS guide gives an illustrative one-hour, 1,000-viewer SD-540p event estimate of about $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for 791 GB of CloudFront distribution, or about $69.74 total, under its stated US East (N. Virginia) assumptions. That example illustrates how viewer delivery can dominate a managed architecture’s cost. It is not an estimate for sending an ingest feed from EC2 to YouTube, nor a quote for a 24/7 channel.
How to choose a server for the stream
- Decide whether the server encodes. A relay or file-pushing process has different compute demands from real-time encoding. Choose CPU or GPU resources only after defining the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to encode; no matched EC2 and Hetzner benchmark establishes a suitable plan here.
- Choose the region for the source and workflow. Consider where the media or operator is, the path to YouTube ingest, and any separate viewer delivery. Do not assume one provider has lower ingest latency without measurements for your locations and setup.
- Match storage and runtime. Include the source files, operating system, disk, and a full month of runtime in the comparison. If the workload uses AWS media or CDN services, include those charges separately rather than treating them as part of an EC2 VM.
- Calculate transfer from the configured output. Use the actual video bitrate and continuous runtime, account for audio and protocol overhead, then check each provider’s applicable allowance and rate.
- Plan recovery and monitoring. A server’s availability commitment or a running encoder process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Decide how the process restarts, what alerts you receive, and how you will recover if the feed stops.
YouTube stream settings that apply to either provider
The cloud provider does not change YouTube’s encoder requirements. YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP streaming and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS streams. Its guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval—not over 4 seconds.
| H.264 output listed in YouTube guidance | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
These are the H.264 recommendations in the specified resolution and frame-rate rows, not guarantees of quality or a universal setting for every codec and source. Use the row matching your intended output and consult YouTube’s full encoder table for other combinations. YouTube’s guidance explains that it transcodes live streams to create output formats for viewers.

Use the stream key associated with the intended YouTube live event and keep it private. Before relying on a continuous stream, test with the actual video motion and audio, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages while it is running. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and reviewing those health messages.

Hetzner’s 99.9% figure is a monthly Cloud Server availability effort measured per individual Cloud Server under its service agreement, with defined exclusions. It does not promise that an encoder will work, YouTube will accept the feed, or a channel will remain live end to end. Do not compare it with an assumed EC2 broadcast guarantee; check the applicable terms for the services you actually use.
Plan for failure at more than one layer: the VM can be unavailable, an encoder or relay can exit, the network path can fail, or YouTube can stop receiving the stream. A restart policy addresses some process failures but does not prove the stream is healthy. Monitoring should include YouTube’s stream-health status as well as the server and streaming process. If the channel cannot tolerate interruption, decide in advance what alert, restart, or failover action is appropriate; provider availability alone is not a recovery plan.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded recordings or a playlist live on YouTube rather than operate your own VM, StreamNeo is the alternative to try first: it runs the stream from the cloud, accepts uploads as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. A slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is on every plan; only the billing length changes.
See StreamNeo or its pricing options. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
Copyright and channel eligibility still matter
A server or cloud streaming service does not grant rights to the video or music you broadcast, and a continuous stream is not a workaround for YouTube’s policies. Confirm you have the necessary rights for every recording, soundtrack, and other included material, and review YouTube’s live-stream rules and channel requirements before scheduling a long-running broadcast. StreamNeo can play uploaded videos; it does not provide a camera-based live broadcast.
Common comparison and setup mistakes
- Pricing a VM as if it serves every viewer: for an ingest-only design, calculate the one feed sent to YouTube. Add viewer delivery only if your architecture actually serves viewers.
- Treating the AWS free allowance as per-instance: the 100 GB monthly transfer-out allowance is aggregated across eligible services and regions and has exclusions.
- Comparing unlike workloads: match whether each server encodes or relays, plus region, CPU/RAM, OS, storage, bitrate, and runtime.
- Reading an availability figure as channel uptime: a server-level service commitment does not cover every part of the YouTube stream path.
- Picking bitrate without matching output: use YouTube’s recommendation for the specific resolution and frame rate, and set keyframes at the recommended interval.
- Assuming a live process means a healthy broadcast: test the actual content and monitor YouTube stream health rather than checking only that the VM is on.
