Always Lalisa is a documentary about Lisa Manobal’s push to define herself beyond Blackpink—through her solo album Alter Ego, her acting debut in The White Lotus, and a major Coachella performance. Directed by Sue Kim, the film is scheduled to open in cinemas internationally on October 12, 2026, with YouTube Premium streaming announced for later in the year.
What is Always Lalisa about?
The feature documentary follows Lisa, known professionally by her first name, through a pivotal period of solo work and self-definition after years with Blackpink. Sony Music Vision says the film traces her writing, recording, and releasing her debut solo album, Alter Ego, acting in season three of The White Lotus, and preparing for her major solo performance at Coachella. It also draws on archival and previously unseen footage from earlier in her life and career, alongside material from 2024–2025.

Lisa told the Associated Press that starting a solo project after almost ten years with Blackpink left her unsure where to begin. She says the experience helped her gain confidence and find her voice. In an interview published October 8, 2026, she described the freedom of solo work: “If I want to do something, I just do it. I don’t have to ask for permission or anything. If I have an idea, we make it happen.”
The film premiered in the Gala program at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. The Associated Press described it as an intimate account that includes appearances by Lisa’s parents and follows her growing independence. Billboard Canada reports that filming began as an archive project before Lisa came to see it as a way to tell her story and perhaps inspire young people with similar ambitions.

How does Lisa move from Blackpink into acting?
Always Lalisa connects Lisa’s solo music career with a new professional challenge: acting. She plays Mook, a resort staffer in season three of Mike White’s HBO series The White Lotus. Lisa told the Associated Press, “I’ve been dancing and singing since I was little. But I feel like acting is something new to me.” The AP reports that White initially rejected the idea of casting a K-pop star as stunt casting, then reconsidered after meeting her.
The documentary presents acting as one part of a broader period of experimentation, not a departure from music. Its account also includes Lisa forming her own management company, performing at Coachella, and singing at the Oscars, according to the Associated Press. Director Sue Kim told the AP she expected to see Lisa testing boundaries and working out what suited her as a person as well as an artist.

What does the film add to Lisa’s career story?
The documentary’s focus is not simply a list of milestones; it is the transition between them. Lisa has described solo work as initially daunting after years in a group, while the film follows her testing new forms of control over her music, image, and choices. Billboard Canada reports that she also discusses rules from her early career, including restrictions on drinking, public dating, and driving. Those details concern Lisa’s reported experience and should not be taken as universal terms for K-pop contracts or trainee life.
For context, the Associated Press reported in 2026 that Blackpink had sold more than 20 million records worldwide and accumulated more than 40 billion streams. Those are AP-reported figures; an underlying audited accounting source was not identified. Billboard Canada also reported that Lisa surpassed 4,000 contestants to become a YG Entertainment trainee, a reported count rather than an independently verified audition statistic.
