All Vaults In The Fallout TV Show, Explained starts with an important distinction: Season 1 establishes four Vaults—31, 32, 33, and 4—but three of them are parts of one connected scheme. Vaults 31, 32, and 33 form a managed system built around Vault-Tec’s future leadership; Vault 4 is a separate experimental Vault that Lucy and Maximus encounter on the surface. The series shares a universe with the games, but tells its own story.

How many Vaults are explained in the show?

The Season 1 story supports four Vaults: 31, 32, 33, and 4. The first three are linked; Vault 4 is separate. This is a Season 1 account, not a complete inventory of every Vault that may appear in the series. Amazon’s official Season 2 announcements establish a journey through the Mojave to New Vegas and a December 2025 premiere, but do not enumerate the season’s Vaults or explain their experiments. Amazon’s Season 2 announcement therefore does not support adding further Vault numbers to this explanation.

Vaults 31, 32, and 33: one connected system

Vaults 31, 32, and 33 are not three independent shelters. Together, they sustain a plan to preserve and install a preferred class of leaders in neighboring communities. The show’s final script identifies the three Vaults, and Bethesda’s companion guide frames Vault 33 within the franchise’s tradition of Vault experiments. Bethesda’s Season 1 companion guide

Vault Place in the scheme What it means for the story
31 Cryogenic storehouse for Vault-Tec personnel connected to Bud Askins’s Bud’s Buds program. Its thawed residents take management roles in the neighboring communities, carrying the organization’s preferred leadership forward.
32 One of the communities whose future is shaped by the 31–32–33 arrangement. Its crisis exposes the concealed connection among the three Vaults.
33 A neighboring community in the same arrangement and Lucy MacLean’s home. Its orderly routines and social ties help make the hidden management scheme consequential to Lucy’s world.

Vault 31: the source of the managers

Vault 31 holds personnel in cryogenic storage. Through Bud Askins’s Bud’s Buds program, people from that storehouse are thawed and placed in management positions in Vaults 32 and 33. The plan is a way to reproduce Vault-Tec’s preferred leadership class across generations, rather than simply a plan to keep residents alive underground. That does not mean every resident of the neighboring Vaults understands the system or its purpose.

Vault 33: Lucy’s home and the audience’s entry point

Lucy MacLean is introduced as a Vault 33 dweller in Bethesda’s official series companion. Vault 33 initially presents itself as an orderly community, with social arrangements and exchanges involving Vault 32 that seem like ordinary parts of life. Once Vault 31’s role comes into view, those routines look different: they are part of a system whose full purpose is hidden from many of the people living within it.

Vault 32: the crisis that reveals the link

Vault 32 is the neighboring community whose crisis brings the hidden relationship among the three Vaults into focus. Its role is not just to provide another setting; events there help expose the mechanism connecting the communities to Vault 31. The series establishes that connection without requiring viewers to treat every resident as an informed participant in the scheme.

Vault 4: a separate experiment

Lucy and Maximus encounter Vault 4 during their journey on the surface. Unlike Vaults 31, 32, and 33, it is not part of Bud’s Buds or the connected management arrangement. It offers refuge while showing another instance of Vault-Tec experimentation. Bethesda’s companion guide encourages viewers to understand the series’ Vaults through this recurring experiment motif and points to Vault 111 in Fallout 4 as a related franchise example. The series’ account of Vault 4 should be kept distinct from details supplied only by game lore or fan references.

How the TV series relates to the games

The television series takes place in the same universe as the role-playing games, but its plot is not a retelling of one game’s storyline. In an official Amazon interview, co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet said, “We knew right from the start that we didn’t want to copy exactly one of the stories from the video games.” That distinction matters when interpreting Vaults: the games provide franchise context, but they do not automatically establish what happens in the show.

For viewers curious about another Vault built around cryostasis, Bethesda specifically points to Vault 111 in Fallout 4. It is a companion example, not a prerequisite for understanding Lucy’s story or a guide to the television series’ Vaults.

What is confirmed about Vaults in Season 2?

Season 2’s official announcement places the story in the Mojave and New Vegas and confirms its December 2025 premiere. Those announcements do not provide a full Vault-by-Vault account. On the evidence available here, the explained list remains Season 1’s Vaults 31, 32, 33, and 4; additional Vault numbers should not be treated as confirmed television locations simply because they appear in a game or fan discussion.
