The clearest named milestones are Nine Tails’ Chakra Mode, Kurama Link Mode, and—much later in Boruto—Baryon Mode. Six Paths power enters the story as another important layer, but official sources do not settle a single name for every appearance that combines it with Kurama’s chakra.
What counts as a Nine-Tails form?
Naruto’s relationship with the Nine-Tails changes over time, and that change matters as much as the appearance of his chakra. Early leaks and unstable tail manifestations occur before he can deliberately control the fox’s chakra. They should not be folded into the later golden Chakra Mode as though every flare were the same named transformation.
The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE’s timeline identifies two distinct milestones: Nine Tails’ Chakra Mode after Naruto pushes back the fox’s hatred, and Kurama Link Mode after Kurama agrees to become his partner. The official material cited here does not present a complete taxonomy of every cloak variation, nor does it define popular fan shorthand such as “KCM1” and “KCM2” as formal tier names.
1. Early leakage and unstable tail manifestations
Before controlled Chakra Mode, Naruto sometimes loses control as the Nine-Tails’ chakra surfaces. These episodes are part of the progression toward mastery, not simply earlier versions of the later controlled golden form. The official sources establish the danger of the fox’s chakra but do not catalogue every tail count as a separately named mode.

2. Nine Tails’ Chakra Mode
Naruto gains Nine Tails’ Chakra Mode during his training to control the Nine-Tails’ chakra. The official timeline recounts that Kushina helps him push back the fox’s hatred; Naruto then gains the ability. It associates the moment with Naruto Volume 53, Chapter 499, “A New Seal!!” (NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE birthday retrospective).
This is the key change from uncontrolled leakage: Naruto can use the chakra as a controlled ability. The official retrospective describes the milestone as a new ability, rather than naming it with a numbered “KCM” tier.

3. Kurama Link Mode
Kurama Link Mode follows a change in the partnership, not merely a visual upgrade. Kurama eventually agrees to help Naruto, and Naruto calls him by name. The official timeline says their deeper bond allows Naruto to activate Kurama Link Mode; it associates this development with Naruto Volume 60, Chapter 571, “Biju Mode!!” (NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE birthday retrospective).
In practical terms, the distinction is relational: Chakra Mode comes after Naruto pushes back the fox’s hatred and gains controlled access; Link Mode comes after Kurama becomes his willing partner. The timeline’s chapter references are useful anchors for readers following the manga’s progression.

4. Six Paths-era power combined with Kurama chakra
Later in the war, Naruto receives power from the Sage of Six Paths after being near death. He also uses Kurama chakra, producing appearances that readers may describe as a combination of Six Paths power and a Kurama cloak or avatar.
The official timeline establishes the Sage’s gift, but it does not settle a definitive name for every simultaneous visual combination. It is therefore more precise to describe the context—Six Paths-era power used alongside Kurama chakra—than to insist that every such appearance is a separate official Nine-Tails mode. “Six Paths Sage Mode” and related fan labels may be useful shorthand, but the source set here does not resolve all naming disputes.

5. Baryon Mode
Baryon Mode appears later, in Boruto, during Naruto and Kurama’s battle with Isshiki. It is not simply a stronger Kurama Link Mode: its mechanism and cost are different. The official Boruto Database says Naruto and Kurama’s chakra undergoes “fusion” rather than being “kneaded together” as usual. It compares the process to nuclear fusion as an in-universe explanation, not as a claim of literal equivalence to real-world physics. The process consumes life force, and the database says Kurama was the actual jutsu user who bore the burden in the Isshiki fight (NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE Boruto Database: Baryon Mode, published September 13, 2024).
The official Kurama database entry says Kurama helps Naruto activate Baryon Mode at the cost of his life, and later revives within Himawari (NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE Kurama database entry, published September 10, 2024). That later development means Naruto should not be described in present tense as still having Kurama available to him.

Where the story places the milestones
The official anime summaries add locating context without serving as a full transformation index. Episode 465 describes Naruto beginning training with Killer Bee to control a Tailed Beast’s power, fighting it head-on, and absorbing its chakra (NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE, episode 465). Episode 495 describes Naruto training in Chakra Mode and sensing Nine-Tails chakra seeping from Kinkaku (NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE, episode 495). These summaries help place the training, but they do not enumerate every transformation or temporary cloak.
