TerBlanche was found unresponsive at her Los Angeles-area home on July 19, 2024. Paramedics pronounced her dead at 11:10 a.m. She was 51.
What the medical examiner reported
“Intracranial hemorrhage” is commonly described as a brain bleed. In TerBlanche’s case, however, the official determination specifies that the bleeding resulted from a blunt-force traumatic head injury. The injury was considered likely due to a ground-level fall.
The wording is important. The medical examiner did not state that anyone witnessed the fall, and the public determination does not establish a more detailed sequence of events. The county medical examiner completed an examination on July 22, 2024, but the cause and manner of death were not certified until January 29, 2025, after test and study results had been received. The case was listed as 2024-11491.
Why early reports differed
Initial reports following TerBlanche’s death said that the cause was pending or under investigation. Some also quoted a publicist’s preliminary description of the death as resulting from “natural causes.” Those accounts were published before the medical examiner had completed the determination and should not be treated as the final finding.
The later county determination supersedes that early description. It identifies traumatic head injury and the resulting intracranial hemorrhage as the cause of death, and an accident as the manner of death. Reports published after the determination by entertainment and general-news outlets reflected that official conclusion.

When did Esta TerBlanche die?
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner identifies the date of death as July 19, 2024. Some early entertainment reports gave July 18, but the county’s official release is the controlling source for the date used here.

Some coverage noted that the county database included asthma in TerBlanche’s medical history. The publicly released cause-and-manner determination, however, identifies blunt-force traumatic head injury and intracranial hemorrhage as the cause of death. It does not establish asthma as the cause or a contributing factor.
Accordingly, asthma should be treated as reported background medical history—not as an explanation for her death. The available public determination also does not describe the death as an unrelated stroke, and it provides no basis for claims of foul play.

Esta TerBlanche’s career
TerBlanche was a South African actress who became best known to American television audiences as Gillian Andrassy on ABC’s daytime soap opera All My Children. She joined the series in 1997 and remained associated with the role until Gillian’s storyline ended in 2001. She later returned to the show as Gillian’s ghost during its final period in 2011.
Gillian was introduced as a Hungarian princess and became part of some of the soap’s prominent romantic and family storylines, including her relationship with Ryan Lavery, played by Cameron Mathison. Gillian’s fictional death and other plot developments belong to the world of the series and should not be confused with the real-world circumstances of TerBlanche’s death.
