Kathryn Bigelow, Jane Campion, and Chloé Zhao have won; the other four have not. The Academy calls the category “Directing,” though it is often referred to as Best Director.
The seven women, in order of first nomination
| Director | First-nominated film | First ceremony | Directing Oscar win |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lina Wertmüller | Seven Beauties (1976) | 1977 | No |
| Jane Campion | The Piano (1993) | 1994 | Yes — The Power of the Dog (2021), at the 2022 ceremony |
| Sofia Coppola | Lost in Translation (2003) | 2004 | No |
| Kathryn Bigelow | The Hurt Locker (2009) | 2010 | Yes — The Hurt Locker (2009) |
| Greta Gerwig | Lady Bird (2017) | 2018 | No |
| Emerald Fennell | Promising Young Woman (2020) | 2021 | No |
| Chloé Zhao | Nomadland (2020) | 2021 | Yes — Nomadland (2020) |
The film year and the Oscar ceremony year are not always the same: The Hurt Locker was released in 2009 and won at the 2010 ceremony; The Power of the Dog was released in 2021 and won at the 2022 ceremony. Academy sidebars identify Wertmüller, Campion, Coppola, and Bigelow as the first four women nominated, and Gerwig as the fifth (Academy, 2018). Fennell and Zhao were the sixth and seventh (Academy, 2021).

Why the count is seven, not eight
The number refers to distinct women, not total nominations. Campion and Zhao each received another Directing nomination after their first. Zhao’s 2026 nomination for Hamnet is a repeat nomination, so it does not add an eighth person to the list. The Academy’s database records nominees through the 98th Awards, presented March 15, 2026, and lists Zhao among the 2026 Directing nominees (Academy Awards Database; 2026 results).
