Sinners, photographed by Autumn Durald Arkapaw, won the 2026 Oscar for Best Cinematography. The Academy’s official record establishes the winner and the five nominees, but it does not rank the four other films against one another. So this list puts the winner first and groups the remaining nominees as runners-up, ordered alphabetically—not as a claim that one has better cinematography than another.
The 2026 Oscar cinematography ranking
The 98th Academy Awards took place on March 15, 2026, and honored films released in 2025. The Academy announced the nominations on January 22, 2026. Here is the category lineup, with the official winner first and the other nominees grouped alphabetically.
- Sinners — Autumn Durald Arkapaw (winner).
- Frankenstein — Dan Laustsen (nominee).
- Marty Supreme — Darius Khondji (nominee).
- One Battle After Another — Michael Bauman (nominee).
- Train Dreams — Adolpho Veloso (nominee).
The Academy’s 98th Academy Awards record identifies the five nominees, their credited cinematographers, and Sinners as the winner. The Associated Press nominee list independently gives the same five-film lineup.
Why the four nominees are not ranked against one another
An Oscar result supplies an official winner, not a critical score for every nominee. The Academy record does not establish that Frankenstein placed ahead of Marty Supreme, for example, or that any one of the four runners-up was the category’s second-best achievement. Alphabetical order makes that distinction visible rather than presenting an unsupported preference as a fact.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A critical ranking would require a stated comparison across the films: how framing directs attention, how movement and shot scale serve a scene, how light, contrast, color, and exposure shape its effect, how consistent the visual approach is, and how strongly the images support the storytelling. Those are useful criteria, but applying them as a comparative verdict requires grounded viewing and film-specific evidence. The available category record supports the award result and credits, not scene-by-scene judgments or technical claims about cameras, lenses, film stock, or capture formats.
What the Academy nomination means
The Academy’s January 22, 2026 nominations announcement says members of each of its 19 branches determine nominees in their respective categories. It also says members must view all nominated films to be eligible to vote. The Academy reported that members submitted nomination ballots from 88 countries; that figure describes ballot participation, not where the nominees came from or how widely audiences watched them.

The Academy’s separate 99th Oscars rules, published in May 2026, specify that eligible Cinematographers Branch members vote in preference order for no more than five pictures, with the five highest vote totals nominated; final cinematography voting is restricted to active and life members. Those are the published rules for the 99th ceremony, not a basis for asserting that every detail was identical in the 98th Oscar cycle.
