Michael B. Jordan won the 2026 Oscar for Actor in a Leading Role for Sinners, but the Academy did not rank the five nominees. This is an editorial ranking of their performances, weighing transformation, emotional range, control of tone and memorability—not a claim of consensus.
The 98th Academy Awards took place on March 15, 2026, honoring films released in 2025. The five nominees were Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon, Michael B. Jordan for Sinners and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent. The Academy named Jordan the winner; the order below is a critical judgment, not an official result.
How this ranking weighs the performances
The order considers how fully each actor inhabits a role, the range and precision of the performance, how well it handles the film’s tone, and what remains memorable afterward. Those criteria can lead viewers to different conclusions. Vogue’s awards-season commentary singled out Hawke as a personal favorite and called Moura’s performance magnetic; Variety’s post-ceremony review described the category as close and named DiCaprio as the reviewer’s personal choice. Those are individual critical responses, not a shared verdict.
The 2026 Best Actor Oscar nominees, ranked
1. Michael B. Jordan — Sinners
Jordan takes the top spot for a performance that anchors Sinners and earned the Academy’s award for Actor in a Leading Role. The win is an official outcome, not proof that every viewer must put his performance first. In this ranking, his work stands out for the command and presence it brings to the film.

2. Ethan Hawke — Blue Moon
Hawke’s performance makes a strong case for the category’s most intimate kind of acting: one that draws attention through detail and control rather than sheer scale. Its close, finely measured quality helps it linger. Vogue’s author named Hawke a personal favorite among the nominees, an indication of how compelling viewers can find the work even when they prefer a different winner.
3. Wagner Moura — The Secret Agent
Moura’s turn is magnetic, with an absorbing presence that gives the performance its pull. The ranking places him just below Hawke because this list gives particular weight to emotional range and tonal control alongside memorability. Vogue also described Moura’s performance as magnetic, though that critical response does not settle the comparison.

4. Leonardo DiCaprio — One Battle After Another
DiCaprio brings the assurance of a leading performance to One Battle After Another, and the category’s closeness makes his placement a matter of emphasis rather than a dismissal. Variety’s post-ceremony reviewer chose him as their personal pick. That difference from this list’s order is a useful reminder: a nominee can be a critic’s preferred performance without being everyone’s highest-ranked one.
5. Timothée Chalamet — Marty Supreme
Chalamet rounds out this ranking of a competitive field. His nomination recognizes his leading performance in Marty Supreme; placing him fifth here reflects how this list weighs the five roles against one another, not a judgment that the work is unworthy of recognition.

Official result versus personal ranking
The Academy’s record confirms the nominees and Jordan’s win, but it does not supply a ranking of performance quality. The list above is one reasoned ordering; a viewer who values a different mix of transformation, emotional range, tonal control and memorability could reasonably rank these five differently.
- Timothée Chalamet — Marty Supreme
- Leonardo DiCaprio — One Battle After Another
- Ethan Hawke — Blue Moon
- Michael B. Jordan — Sinners — winner
- Wagner Moura — The Secret Agent
