The four new emotions in Inside Out 2 are Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment. They enter Riley’s mind as she moves into adolescence, each drawing attention to a different kind of concern: what might go wrong, what others have, what feels pointless, and the discomfort of being noticed. They are characters in a story, not a clinical model or a complete map of human emotion.
Who are the four new emotions?
Pixar’s production notes describe the characters with concise shorthand: Anxiety is focused on preparing for what may happen; Envy is “always-admiring”; Ennui is blasé and detached; and Embarrassment is “oft-mortified.” The film turns those feelings into distinct personalities so viewers can follow the conflicts inside Riley’s mind.
| Emotion | What it attends to | Its role in Riley’s story | Voice actor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anxiety | Possible future problems | Plans ahead to protect Riley, but becomes controlling | Maya Hawke |
| Envy | Other people’s qualities or possessions | Admiringly wants what she sees in others | Ayo Edebiri |
| Ennui | Low engagement and dissatisfaction | Gives Riley’s bored, blasé detachment a voice | Adèle Exarchopoulos |
| Embarrassment | Social exposure and awkwardness | Makes Riley’s mortified, self-conscious moments visible | Paul Walter Hauser |
The distinctions in the table describe the film’s portrayals, not diagnostic categories. Disney’s production notes supply the character descriptions; Disney’s film page lists the voice cast.
What does Anxiety represent in Inside Out 2?
Anxiety represents the urge to anticipate danger and prepare for outcomes that have not happened yet. Her intention is protective: if she can spot trouble early, she can help Riley avoid it. In the story, though, that vigilance becomes overbearing. Anxiety tries to manage Riley’s choices rather than simply help her think ahead, creating a conflict with Joy’s preference for keeping Riley happy in the present.

Voice actor Maya Hawke said she drew on the familiar worried voice in her own head for the performance, describing worries about wearing the wrong shoes, being late to the airport or saying the wrong thing. She also clarified that this was not debilitating or medical-grade anxiety. Her comments explain an acting choice; they are not medical guidance or a claim that the character can diagnose viewers. The Disney interview with Hawke was published June 13, 2024.
What does Envy mean in the film?
Envy notices what other people have and admires it. Disney’s production notes call her “always-admiring,” a phrase that captures both her attention to others and her desire to have what she sees—or to be more like the person who has it. The film gives this familiar feeling its own small, expressive character and comic function.

Envy and jealousy can overlap in everyday speech, but they are not interchangeable in every context. The film’s personification is a storytelling device, not a definitive explanation of the distinction or a claim that envy is always malicious.
What does Ennui mean in Inside Out 2?
Ennui is a French-derived word for weariness or dissatisfaction often associated with boredom. In the movie, Ennui embodies detached, blasé disinterest. Director Kelsey Mann put the character’s role simply: “If you’ve ever asked a teenager how their day was and heard ‘fine,’ that’s Ennui.” That line comes from the Disney/Pixar production notes, dated May 23, 2024.

What does Embarrassment represent?
Embarrassment gives visible form to the feeling of being exposed, noticed or socially awkward. The production notes describe him as “oft-mortified.” His presence lets the audience see Riley’s self-conscious discomfort as a character in her mind, rather than treating every awkward moment as a lesson or a diagnosis. That is the film’s particular way of dramatizing adolescence, not a universal account of how every teenager feels.
Why does the sequel add these emotions?
Inside Out 2 uses the new arrivals to complicate the original emotional team as Riley enters adolescence. Pixar says the filmmakers met with experts, read books and spoke with psychologists while developing the story. That background informed the production; it does not mean the movie reproduces an accepted clinical model of emotion.

Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter has explained that the first film simplified its emotional cast for clarity, while the sequel let the filmmakers explore emotions they had not used before. Some, such as Ennui and Embarrassment, are more abstract than Joy or Sadness, so the team worked to make them visually understandable. In a Disney interview published June 14, 2024, Docter said the filmmakers were “really working hard from the first film on is to make sure that we’re visually clear.” See Docter’s interview with The Walt Disney Company and Pixar’s production overview.
The new characters are not simply a set of bad emotions to defeat. Each has a role in the story, while the conflict comes when one feeling dominates Riley’s decisions. Anxiety’s attempt to protect her, for example, becomes a problem when preparation turns into control. The released film’s official screenplay provides production evidence for the characters’ arrival and Anxiety’s effort to rebuild Riley’s sense of self; it is a script, not a substitute for the finished film.
