Start with Inception if you want Christopher Nolan’s clearest science-fiction hook; follow it with Interstellar for a more emotionally expansive story. My ranking weighs the clarity and strength of each film’s speculative premise, its emotional impact, narrative control, and how effectively it uses its central idea. The order is an editorial judgment, not a universal consensus—and the four films approach science fiction in notably different ways.
How these four films fit the sci-fi label
This list covers The Prestige (2006), Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), and Tenet (2020). The British Film Institute groups them among Nolan’s ambitious original ideas made at scale, while describing Inception specifically as a science-fiction epic. They are not interchangeable examples of the genre: one is a dream heist, one a space drama, one a rivalry shaped by misdirection and a speculative device, and one a spy thriller organized around time inversion. BFI’s overview of Nolan’s films offers context for that range.
1. Inception (2010)
Inception is the strongest starting point because its central conceit is easy to grasp and gives the film a clear engine: a team enters a target’s dreams, where one dream can contain another. Time moves at different rates across the layers, turning the premise into a source of escalating pressure as well as elaborate action. The BFI calls it a science-fiction epic and describes its dream-layer time distortion. Read the BFI’s discussion of Inception.
Its intricate construction remains anchored by personal stakes, so the mechanics do not have to carry the whole film. That balance—an immediately legible idea, inventive set pieces, and an emotional thread—makes it the most complete package in this ranking. The BFI reports that Inception received four Academy Awards from eight nominations; that is useful context for its reception, not a score of its artistic merit.

2. Interstellar (2014)
Interstellar is the most expansive film here, using space travel and time dilation to put an intimate family relationship under extraordinary strain. The BFI explains that a few hours on one planet correspond to 23 years aboard the Endurance. That difference turns a theoretical effect into a painful consequence for characters separated by distance and time. The BFI’s account of the film also traces its treatment of time to Nolan’s engagement with theoretical physicist Kip Thorne.
It ranks just below Inception because its scale and emotional reach are formidable, while its ideas make for a less compact entry point. Viewers who value emotional sweep above narrative economy could reasonably put it first.

3. The Prestige (2006)
The Prestige is the most intimate and mystery-driven entry in the group. Its core is a bitter rivalry between two stage magicians, shaped by obsession, deception, and the logic of a magic trick. A speculative element enters the story, but the film is better described as a psychological thriller with science-fiction aspects than as a conventional science-fiction adventure. The BFI places it among Nolan’s original large-scale films and highlights rivalry and sleight of hand in its treatment of time. See the BFI’s discussion.
Its reveal-driven structure makes it a satisfying change of pace after the more expansive premises of the top two. It sits third in this ranking because its speculative idea is less central to the viewing experience than the dream architecture of Inception or the time dilation of Interstellar.

4. Tenet (2020)
Tenet turns a spy thriller into a puzzle about “time inversion”: the BFI describes its process as entropy reversal, with images that can be read forwards and backwards. The mechanic shapes not only individual action sequences but also the film’s structure, making it the most demanding of these four to follow on first viewing. The BFI explains the film’s inversion concept.
That difficulty is also part of the ambition. In a 2024 interview with the Associated Press, Nolan said, “The thing with ‘Tenet’ is, I think of all the films I have made, it’s the one that’s very much about the experience of watching films.” He also said, “A lot of that is about sound and music and this huge image.” Read the Associated Press interview. Its scale and audiovisual design may make it a favorite for viewers drawn to formal audacity, even if its narrative clarity places it fourth here.
Rank #4
How to choose what to watch first
| If you want… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A clear, high-concept premise with layered action | Inception | Dream layers and their different time rates drive both the plot and the set pieces. |
| Space, time dilation, and family stakes | Interstellar | Its cosmic scale is tied directly to the cost of time apart. |
| A compact rivalry and a mystery built on misdirection | The Prestige | Its speculative element serves a psychological thriller about obsession and deception. |
| A formal puzzle and ambitious audiovisual spectacle | Tenet | Its inversion mechanic makes the viewing experience deliberately challenging. |
There is no authoritative ranking of these four films. The placement reflects a preference for a strong speculative hook that remains emotionally accessible and narratively controlled. A viewer who prizes emotional sweep may move Interstellar to the top; one who values formal audacity may rank Tenet higher. Nolan-film discussions show that rankings vary, but an individual discussion is not representative polling. See one audience discussion of Nolan rankings.
