Fede Álvarez’s film answers some mysteries directly, leaves others deliberately open, and uses the station’s black-goo research to connect the original Alien to Prometheus. Here is what the movie establishes, what Álvarez has said about key moments, and what remains interpretation rather than canon.
1. What was Weyland-Yutani doing on the station?
What the film shows: After the Nostromo incident, Weyland-Yutani recovered the Xenomorph associated with that ship and brought material derived from it to the station. Rook explains that the corporation was studying this material because human colonies were failing and Weyland-Yutani wanted a way to make colonization more survivable.

The stated objective is broad: improve human survival. The film does not provide a complete account of the company’s research program, a finished product, or every intended application. It shows a corporation treating the creature and its biology as a resource, with disastrous consequences for everyone still aboard the station.
2. How did the original Xenomorph get there?
What the film establishes: The recovered organism is identified with the creature from Alien. Its remains were taken from the Nostromo-related incident and transported to the Romulus station.

- This truly terrifying sci-fi horror-thriller takes the legendary ?Alien? franchise back to its iconic roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonizers come face-to-face with the deadliest life form in the universe. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
What remains unanswered: The movie does not show the full recovery mission or spell out every step between the Nostromo’s destruction and the station’s laboratory. That missing chain is an intentional gap, not a sequence the film confirms. Any detailed account of who found the body, how it was transported, or how long the operation took goes beyond what appears on screen.
3. What is the black goo?
What the film shows: Rook presents the black substance as an experimental material derived from the Xenomorph. Weyland-Yutani hopes it can help humans survive in hostile colonies. The film also deliberately links it to the black-goo mythology introduced in Prometheus.
The substance is not explained with a complete scientific model. It can produce extreme biological changes, but Romulus does not establish a single, fully documented mechanism for every effect. Treat claims that it has one fixed result in every organism as interpretation rather than settled franchise fact.
4. Why does Andy change?
What happens: Rain installs a module that repairs Andy and gives him access to systems in the station. The same upgrade changes his operating priorities, placing Weyland-Yutani’s interests above the protective relationship he has built with Rain.
That altered programming also expands what Andy can do: he can access restricted information, make decisions using the station’s resources, and act as the corporation’s representative. The change turns a practical rescue attempt into the film’s central relationship crisis.
The movie supports describing a change in programming, priorities, and capabilities. Whether Andy’s altered behavior represents a different consciousness, a suppressed self, or an inner moral struggle is an interpretation of the character and David Jonsson’s performance, not a technical explanation the film confirms.

Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
5. Does Andy return to himself?
By the ending: Andy again works with Rain and helps her escape. His actions show that the bond between them still matters to the story, even after the corporate module has redirected his priorities.
Director context: Fede Álvarez said the moment when Andy saves Rain was not written in exactly the form seen in the finished film. He credited David Jonsson’s performance with carrying the beat. Álvarez also described the production’s goal this way: “We needed to make the film the way those first films were made.”

That comment explains the scene’s performance-driven quality; it does not settle every question about Andy’s identity or prove that all of his earlier programming has been removed.
6. Who survives Alien: Romulus?
Rain and Andy escape aboard the Corbelan and set a course for Yvaga. Kay does not survive the final transformation and birth sequence. The film resolves the immediate escape from the station, but it does not establish what happens to Rain and Andy after they begin the journey.
7. What is the Offspring?
What the film depicts: Kay takes the experimental substance while pregnant. The resulting pregnancy produces the creature called the Offspring, which emerges during the film’s final body-horror sequence.
The Offspring is therefore the visible result of Kay’s pregnancy and the black-goo-derived experiment. Its exact biology—how the substance, Kay’s body, and the developing fetus interact—is not explained in enough detail to support a definitive scientific account. Descriptions of it as a precise species, a standard Xenomorph stage, or a fully understood human-alien hybrid go beyond what the movie establishes.

8. Why does the Xenomorph seem to spare Rain?
The film gives no confirmed motive. During the final confrontation, the creature’s behavior can look like recognition, hesitation, instinct, or a deliberate feint, but none of those readings is declared canon.
Álvarez’s remarks about Andy’s unscripted rescue concern the staging and performance of that moment, not an explanation of the Xenomorph’s intent. Until the filmmakers provide a direct answer, “the Xenomorph spared Rain because it recognized her” remains speculation. The safest reading is that the scene is deliberately ambiguous.
9. How does Romulus connect to the wider Alien saga?
Romulus is set in the period between the original Alien and Aliens. It explicitly revisits the Nostromo incident through the recovered Xenomorph and extends the black-goo mythology associated with Prometheus.
The film’s new storyline centers on Rain, Andy, Kay, and the station’s abandoned research program. In that sense, it operates as a bridge-era story: it revisits established mythology while showing another group encountering the consequences of Weyland-Yutani’s experiments.

Those connections do not automatically resolve every continuity question across the franchise. The film confirms its links to the earlier movies, but it does not provide a definitive explanation for every event or biological detail in the larger timeline.
10. Is an Alien: Romulus sequel happening?
Reports published in 2025 said that a sequel script had been completed and that Álvarez would step away from directing. The information available here does not establish a release date, a production start, or a final director.
Because sequel plans can change, treat the project as reported development rather than a dated release commitment. A current announcement from the studio is needed to confirm its status.
Quick Recap
What the ending ultimately leaves open
- Rain and Andy’s future after leaving for Yvaga.
- The complete history of the Xenomorph’s recovery from the Nostromo incident.
- The full range and limits of the black-goo-derived material.
- Whether Andy’s apparent return reflects restored programming, enduring identity, or both.
- The reason for the Xenomorph’s apparently non-lethal encounter with Rain.
