Alien: Romulus is a tense, tactile return to the franchise’s horror roots, built with enough craft to make its familiar nightmares work again. But its strongest moments often draw on memories of earlier films rather than giving this crew or their story a distinct identity. It’s a worthwhile scare for fans who want the series to feel frightening again; viewers looking for a bold reinvention may find the nostalgia doing too much of the work.

What is Alien: Romulus about?

Directed by Fede Alvarez, this 2024 installment follows young space colonizers scavenging a derelict station, where they encounter a lethal life form. The setup puts a vulnerable crew in a confined, hostile environment—the kind of pressure cooker that has always suited Alien best. The film is rated R. 20th Century Studios lists its runtime as 1 hour 59 minutes, while Disney+ lists 1 hour 58 minutes; the difference is minor and may reflect how each service presents the running time.

Alvarez has said his aim was to return to the franchise’s original simplicity: “the whole point of this movie was to take back Alien to the simplicity of the beginning of the franchise, where it was, above all things, a horror movie.” That intent is easy to recognize in the film’s emphasis on peril, cramped spaces and the threat of what cannot be safely seen.

Does the horror work?

Mostly, yes. The station’s industrial spaces and the crew’s limited room to maneuver give the danger a physical scale. The film understands that suspense comes not only from a creature appearing, but from the anticipation of where it might be and what a narrow corridor or failing system will allow it to do. When the danger is allowed to build, Romulus delivers the uneasy, close-quarters dread that distinguishes the series from more conventional action-driven science fiction.

Alien: Romulus - Blu-ray + Digital
  • This truly terrifying sci-fi horror-thriller takes the legendary ?Alien? franchise back to its iconic roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonizers come face-to-face with the deadliest life form in the universe. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.

That approach makes the film feel like a deliberate return rather than a new genre direction. It is less interested in expanding the franchise’s mythology than in putting people in a frightening place and making survival feel uncertain. The trade-off is that the story’s familiar machinery can become visible: tension sometimes gives way to recognition, as a remembered franchise image or beat announces itself before the scene has made it its own.

How do the creature effects and production design hold up?

The best effects work gives the film a convincing, tangible menace. Sets and creatures were built for the cast to interact with, and the production combined practical effects, animatronics and spaceship miniatures with digital work from Industrial Light & Magic and Wētā. Alvarez described the approach this way: “That’s why we built everything on practical effects, animatronics, [and] miniatures for the spaceships, and combined them with the latest computer-generated work that the best companies like Industrial Light & Magic and WĒTĀ can provide.”

Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.

The result is not a rejection of digital effects but a useful balance: physical environments give actors something to react to, while computer-generated work can extend the scale and movement of the threat. That tactile foundation helps sell the horror. The creature is most effective when it feels like an intruder in a real, cramped place, not simply an image placed into one.

Does the film offer more than nostalgia?

It offers a capable new survival story, but its relationship with the earlier films is both its advantage and its limitation. Familiar visual language gives Romulus an immediate sense of belonging; fans can settle into its atmosphere without a long explanation of what kind of nightmare they are watching. Yet echoes are not the same as fresh ideas. At points, the film leans so heavily on franchise memory that its own identity feels secondary.

The young ensemble gives the story a different generational perspective, with Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu among the credited cast. The central dramatic test, though, is whether the crew become more than a set of people caught in a familiar ordeal. The film is stronger at staging danger than at making every character equally memorable, so the suspense and craft carry more weight than deep characterization.
