Alien: Earth is a confident expansion of the franchise, and its shift from isolated spacecraft to corporate Earth gives it room to explore artificial bodies, identity and power alongside creature horror. That ambition makes the series distinctive, but also slower and broader than a nonstop Xenomorph hunt. Viewers drawn to world-building and unsettling ideas are more likely to embrace it than those seeking an uninterrupted run of attacks.
What is Alien: Earth about?
Created for television by Noah Hawley, Alien: Earth is the first live-action Alien series. Its first season has eight episodes, according to Hulu’s series listing. The story begins when the deep-space research vessel USCSS Maginot crashes on Earth. The disaster draws attention to its dangerous cargo and puts rival corporate interests into play.
At the center is Wendy (Sydney Chandler), a hybrid whose synthetic body carries human consciousness. Her brother Hermit (Alex Lawther), a tactical officer and medic, is among the people caught up in the fallout. Around them, five corporations—Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold—compete over technology and influence. The resulting story is not just about surviving a monster; it is also about who gets to control bodies, minds and the future.
How does Alien: Earth fit into the Alien timeline?
The series is set in 2120, two years before the events of the original 1979 film. That prequel placement gives it a recognizable franchise backdrop while letting it build a world beyond the films’ familiar shipboard settings. For a timeline overview, see TIME’s Alien timeline explainer.

Its new setting and hybrid premise widen the franchise’s scope, though that expansion is not guaranteed to satisfy every longtime fan. Critics’ early reactions differed over how the series handles established mythology and whether it develops its freshest ideas far enough. Treat canon debates as debates, rather than assuming the show either settles them or requires a single correct interpretation.
What works best: a wider world and a human question
The Earth setting changes the texture of the franchise. Corporate cityscapes and competing interests replace the tight confines of a ship as the main frame, giving the series space to connect danger with institutions and ambition. That wider canvas is one of its clearest strengths, even if some viewers may wish it pushed further into its own new territory.

Wendy’s hybrid identity gives the science fiction an intimate center. If a person’s consciousness is placed in a synthetic body, what makes that person the same individual? The question turns technological speculation into a character dilemma, and it keeps the show’s interest in human identity in view even when the creatures are not driving the scene.
Hawley has said he did not want the monsters to be the entire point of the show: “The first thing you have to do is figure out how the monsters work in the show, because the point of the show can’t be the monsters, otherwise you have a very short show,” he told Disney. “So I took the monsters out of the story and had to figure out what the story would be about.” The result gives corporate rivalry and the hybrids’ humanity real narrative weight, rather than treating them as decoration around a creature feature.

How much horror and Xenomorph action is there?
The series keeps creature imagery and danger in the mix, but it does not make the classic Xenomorph the only source of unease. New creatures add unpredictability, while androids, corporate power and the question of what counts as human bring other kinds of dread. That blend broadens the show’s horror, though it also means that viewers looking mainly for sustained Xenomorph action may find the emphasis elsewhere.
The initial critical response reflected that divide. A Rotten Tomatoes roundup published August 5, 2025 included complaints about limited Xenomorph material and choppy action as well as praise for the series’ expansion of the franchise. GamesRadar’s review, which covered six of the eight episodes ahead of release, found the new creatures unpredictable and the classic alien dangerous and enigmatic. These are early critical perspectives, not a settled verdict on every episode.

Where the series can feel uneven
Alien: Earth takes time to establish its world, then moves among horror, corporate satire, character drama and moments of humor. The range gives the series a broader identity than a straightforward survival story, but shifts in tone can be jarring. Some viewers will appreciate the variety; others may feel that the detours interrupt the suspense.
The hybrids’ childlike characterization is part of the show’s unease, but it can also create awkward tonal turns and frustrating choices. The character-led approach is a deliberate alternative to letting monsters carry every episode, yet its effectiveness depends on how much patience a viewer has for the people and power struggles around the threat.

Can newcomers watch it, and will fans enjoy it?
Hawley has said he wanted viewers to understand that they did not need to have watched an Alien movie first. The series introduces its own central characters, conflict and setting, so newcomers can follow its basic story without treating prior films as homework. That stated intention does not guarantee every lore choice will work for established fans, who may judge the series against a longer history of franchise mythology.
Compared with the films, the main difference is not simply that this is a longer story. The series uses eight episodes to give corporate rivalry, hybrid identity and the Earth setting more room, while the films more often concentrate their scale around a contained survival crisis. Whether that feels like a meaningful evolution or an unfocused detour depends on what a viewer values most: the original films’ concentrated dread, or a wider examination of the world that produces it.
Where can you watch Alien: Earth?
In the United States, the series premiered on FX and Hulu; the first two episodes arrived August 12, 2025, with subsequent episodes following Tuesdays, according to FX’s show guide. Hulu currently lists the completed first season. Disney’s guide also described access for bundle subscribers, and international availability has included Disney+, but catalogs vary by region and can change. Check Hulu, FX or the relevant Disney+ catalog where you live before subscribing.
