Spoilers for Alien: Earth Season 1, Episode 8, “The Real Monsters.” Wendy’s uprising gives the season a forceful character payoff, but the finale’s most exciting turn is also its most unsettling: the hybrids win control of Neverland without proving they will use power any better than the adults did.
What happens in the Alien: Earth finale?
“The Real Monsters,” the eighth episode and first-season finale, overturns the order on Neverland. Wendy uses her abilities to free herself and the other hybrids, then sends them to capture the adults who have controlled them. She rescues Joe before the eye creature can make him its host. By the end, the adults are confined and Wendy declares, “Now we rule,” as TIME recounts in its finale explanation.
That is a concrete victory for Wendy and the hybrids, not a resolution of the wider conflict. The ending leaves humans, hybrids and alien species competing for an uncertain future; the arrival of Weyland-Yutani forces raises another question, since the episode does not establish what the company intends.
Why the finale feels satisfying—and uneasy
Wendy becomes a leader on her own terms
The revolt pays off Wendy’s movement from manipulated subject to decision-maker. She is no longer merely being directed by adults or defined by Joe’s wishes. Her choice to protect the hybrids, and her declaration of rule, make the climax feel like the result of her season-long change rather than a victory delivered by someone else.
#1 Best Overall
- Alien Terror
The official FX podcast connects the cemetery opening with the hybrids’ humanity, giving the finale’s uprising a dimension beyond revenge. Matt Goldberg’s season review likewise reads the story through betrayal, independence and the way human actions become monstrous.
The transfer of power may repeat the old mistakes
The final reversal is not uncomplicated emancipation: the adults who once controlled the hybrids are now held under their watch. Co-executive producer Migizi Pensoneau describes the danger as the children perpetuating their elders’ mistakes rather than necessarily learning a better way. The moment can feel exhilarating because the hybrids have broken their confinement, and ominous because their new authority has not yet become a new ethic.

- Alien 2: On Earth
- Alien 2 - Sulla Terra
That ambiguity gives the title “The Real Monsters” its bite. The episode does not neatly assign goodness to the hybrids and evil to the adults. It asks what power will do to children who have been used, hurt and taught cruelty by the people meant to protect them.
What remains unresolved after “Now we rule”?
Can Wendy control what she thinks might be an ally?
Wendy believes the Xenomorph may be good or could become an ally. Series creator Noah Hawley questions that confidence in a TV Insider interview, arguing that wild things cannot simply be controlled. Wendy’s hope makes the finale’s victory precarious: her new authority does not mean she can command every force around her.

What happens to Arthur and the eye creature?
Arthur’s body becomes the eye creature’s new host, but the episode does not settle whether that arrangement is permanent or what the creature will do next. Hawley described it as opportunistic and said he did not think Arthur was necessarily a lasting solution, leaving the character’s fate open. TheWrap’s interview with Hawley also addresses the eye creature and the finale’s unresolved story.
What do Wendy and Joe want from each other?
Their reunion does not erase their disagreement over whether Wendy wants to leave or belongs with the hybrids. Hawley frames Joe’s challenge as supporting Wendy’s autonomy rather than assuming he knows what is best for her. That leaves their relationship unresolved in a way that belongs to the characters, not just the show’s larger mythology.

What will the new rulers choose?
Wendy’s “Now we rule” is a declaration, not an answer to what kind of rule the hybrids will build. Hawley has suggested their hurt and anger may lead to poor choices, comparing the danger to Lord of the Flies. That is his interpretation of the setup, not a confirmed account of Season 2. In the FX podcast, he says the show has not yet revealed which species will dominate.

It depends on what a viewer wants a finale to deliver. As a character and thematic climax, the episode lands: Wendy changes from controlled subject to leader, and the hybrids’ revolt gives the season a decisive immediate payoff. As a self-contained ending with extensive conflict resolution or a major creature-action climax, it is more open-ended.

That split helps explain the different critical readings. Goldberg’s review emphasizes the season’s themes, while GamesRadar’s Episode 8 review found the hour more like a pause than a conclusive finale and wanted more Xenomorph action. That is one critic’s response, not a measure of audience consensus. The finale is satisfying if the central payoff is Wendy’s transformation and the moral instability of her victory; it may frustrate viewers expecting the season to close more of its story or build to a larger creature confrontation.
Will there be an Alien: Earth Season 2?
Yes. Disney announced the renewal on November 12, 2025, and its July 10, 2026 update says production is underway in London. The July announcement does not give a premiere date. It also announced Tracey Ullman, Sam Spruell and Jerome Flynn joining the cast alongside previously announced Peter Dinklage. Disney’s UK announcement specifies that the series will stream exclusively on Disney+ in the UK; that territorial statement should not be treated as a global distribution claim.
For context, Disney’s renewal announcement reported a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and an 85 Metacritic score for the series in 2025. Those are dated, series-level figures—not scores for Episode 8. The episode itself has no established audience or viewership figure in the cited sources. In the United States, FX’s podcast description lists the series as available on Hulu and FX; internationally it lists Disney+, but availability can vary by territory.
