Keys and Beatz met through mutual friends in New York in the 1990s. In her 2020 memoir More Myself, Keys wrote that she was 14 and Beatz was 16 when they met. In a 2016 interview with The Guardian, she described having known him since she was about 16. The differing recollections point to the same broad history: they were acquainted as teenagers, long before they became a couple.

The relationship became romantic in 2008, after Beatz separated from Mashonda Tifrere. CBS dates the couple’s relationship to fall 2008. Accounts of the period attracted public scrutiny, but the available reporting does not establish wrongdoing; Keys later addressed the experience through the song “Blended Family (What You Do for Love).”

- Genesis Ali Dean: born at 1:52 a.m. on December 27, 2014, weighing 6 lb 5 oz.
They are also raising a blended family that includes Beatz’s three older children.
