Alex Newell won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for playing Lulu in Shucked. The award made Newell and J. Harrison Ghee the first openly nonbinary performers to win Tony Awards in acting categories—but not the first openly nonbinary Tony winners overall.
What Tony did Alex Newell win?
Newell won for their performance as Lulu in Shucked. The American Theatre Wing’s official 2023 winners record lists the award as Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical. That is the category’s official title; it does not, by itself, establish Newell’s preferred pronouns.
Shucked is a Broadway musical comedy about a town and its corn crop. It opened at the Nederlander Theatre on April 4, 2023. The Tony Awards’ official show record lists nine nominations and one win—the award Newell received.
What was the historic first?
Newell and Ghee, who won for Some Like It Hot, became the first openly nonbinary performers to win Tony Awards in acting categories. The Washington Post reported on the distinction after the June 11, 2023 ceremony, and TIME interviewed the pair before the ceremony about the milestone.

The phrase “first openly nonbinary Tony winner” needs a broader-versus-narrower distinction: Toby Marlow, co-writer of Six, was reported as the first openly nonbinary Tony winner overall, in 2022, for the musical’s score. Newell and Ghee’s 2023 achievement was the first in Tony acting categories.
What did Newell say about award categories?
In a May 31, 2023 TIME interview with Ghee, Newell discussed the difficulty of changing award categories. “The change itself is an extremely hard one to make,” they said, adding, “It’s a deeper conversation. I think it’s adding a category, widening the horizon of the category.” Those comments expressed Newell’s view at the time; they were not an announcement of Tony Awards policy.
