Rust had resumed production in Montana in April 2023, and Alec Baldwin indicated the Western had finished filming by May. The reports establish the wrap month, not an independently confirmed final day. The film was later released in 2025.

When did Rust finish filming?

Baldwin indicated filming had wrapped by May 2023, about 18 months after a fatal shooting halted production. CBS reported his wrap announcement on May 16, after he shared a post following a shave of the facial hair he had grown for the Western. The available reporting does not identify the precise last day of filming or cite a production-company completion certificate. CBS News reported the wrap.

What happened to production after the 2021 shooting?

On October 21, 2021, a live round discharged from a revolver used as a prop on the Rust set in Santa Fe County. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot, and director Joel Souza was injured. Production stopped.

In February 2023, producers announced plans to complete the film. Souza returned as director, Bianca Cline took over as cinematographer, and Hutchins’s husband, Matthew Hutchins, joined as an executive producer. Souza described the decision as “bittersweet” and said the team was committed to completing what he and Hutchins had started. Vanity Fair reported the producers’ announcement and Souza’s statement.

Where and how did filming resume?

Principal photography resumed in April 2023 at Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana. Rust Movie Productions said working weapons and any form of ammunition would be prohibited on the resumed set. ABC reported that union crew members were working on the production and that two safety officers were among the new crew. These were production commitments and reported staffing details, not proof that every possible risk had been eliminated. ABC News reported on the restart.

Was Rust released?

Yes. Distributor Falling Forward Films lists Rust as a 2025 film and describes its release as theatrical and PVOD. Its listing does not establish availability on a particular subscription-streaming service or confirm a DVD or Blu-ray edition. See the distributor’s film listing.

How were the safety case and Baldwin’s criminal case different?

New Mexico’s Occupational Health and Safety Bureau handled a workplace-safety matter involving Rust Movie Productions. The bureau said its investigation was separate from the criminal investigation. The company agreed to a $100,000 penalty in a settlement that reclassified one citation from “Willful Serious” to “Serious,” left a second citation in place, and required 30 days’ notice before production work in New Mexico during the following five years. That administrative settlement was not a criminal verdict. The New Mexico bureau describes its investigation and settlement.

Baldwin’s involuntary-manslaughter charge was dismissed during his July 2024 trial after allegations that police and prosecutors had withheld evidence from the defense. In December 2024, The Associated Press reported that prosecutors would not appeal the dismissal. That account also described separate civil proceedings brought by Hutchins’s relatives and the sentence imposed on weapons supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. The criminal case, the workplace-safety settlement, and civil litigation were distinct proceedings; completion of the film did not resolve them. The Associated Press reported the December 2024 legal update.
