In a January 2024 interview with PEOPLE, actor Alaqua Cox said she was bullied at school for being deaf and an amputee, and that the school district did not listen when she complained. She also described a lack of awareness about Deaf culture at school. Her account is personal testimony, not evidence about every school or student’s experience.
What Alaqua Cox said about being bullied
Cox told PEOPLE: “I got bullied for being deaf and an amputee, and I would complain, but the district wouldn’t listen.” She also said of the school environment, “There was no awareness about deaf culture at all.” The interview’s account was reproduced in a January 10, 2024 Yahoo search result, and ComicBook.com quoted portions of the interview.
Her words describe both the bullying she experienced and her perception of the institution’s response: she said she raised complaints, but felt the district did not listen. The interview does not establish how the district handled specific complaints or provide its response.
Her family and childhood
Cox said she grew up in a hearing family with a deaf younger brother, and that her family signs: “I come from a hearing family and I have a deaf little brother as well … All my family sign, we are all very close.” The PEOPLE interview reproduction and a Leap in! profile identify her as having grown up on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Wisconsin.

In the May 2024 profile, Cox also spoke about surgeries on her leg, time spent in a wheelchair, and having to relearn how to walk. She has not publicly disclosed the cause of her amputation, according to the PEOPLE interview reproduction.
How Cox moved from the interview’s story to acting
Friends encouraged Cox to apply for a casting call seeking an Indigenous deaf woman in her twenties. According to ComicBook.com’s January 13, 2024 report, she had worked jobs including warehouse work and nursing-home care before landing her first acting role as Maya Lopez in Hawkeye. She later played the character in Marvel’s Echo.

Cox said former bullies contacted her after she landed the Marvel role. Reflecting on what she wanted to show them, she told PEOPLE: “I’m just very proud to be able to show them that I can do anything. I can achieve anything on the same level as any other normal person could. I can be a superhero. Anything is possible.”

In its May 2024 profile, Leap in! reported that Echo incorporated Cox’s prosthetic lower right leg into Maya Lopez’s backstory. The profile also described production efforts that included a deaf acting coach and deaf personal trainer, Choctaw representatives helping check Indigenous language, and crew members learning basic sign language. Those are details reported by the profile, rather than claims made in Cox’s bullying account.

The same profile quoted Cox saying she was glad amputees could see an amputee superhero and urging them not to feel they must “fix” themselves. Her account of childhood bullying and her later comments about representation are related, but distinct: the first concerns what she said happened to her at school; the second concerns what she hopes audiences take from seeing a character like Maya Lopez.
