The process later reopened with new scenes for finalists, and Ritchson went on to play the lead. The interview does not give a single reason for the first-round decision. The phrase “too close to home” does not appear as Ritchson’s explanation in the material available, so it should not be read as a verified cause.
What Ritchson said about the first round
In the TheWrap interview, reporter Adam Chitwood describes Ritchson as “clamoring for a shot” at the lead. Ritchson says he did not get it in the first round. He defended that result by pointing to the audition material itself. The scene he was given was unusual because the character barely speaks, which made it hard to show who Reacher is.

Ritchson put it this way:
- “We were auditioning with a scene where Reacher doesn’t say anything, so it was very tough to play.”
That is his description of the difficulty, not an account of why the producers chose someone else. The interview does not include a statement from the production explaining the first-round outcome.
How the casting process unfolded
Ritchson’s account of the later stages, as reported by TheWrap, runs in this order:
#1 Best Overall
- First round: Ritchson auditions and is not selected, using a scene in which Reacher does not speak.
- Change in casting leadership: A new casting director joins the process.
- New material: Finalists are given new scenes to perform.
- Length: Ritchson estimates the whole process ran six or seven months. He called it “long” and “arduous,” and said, “I campaigned hard for it.”
The six-to-seven-month figure is Ritchson’s own estimate, not a documented timeline from the production or Prime Video. Attribute it to him if you repeat it.
The military-family connection
Ritchson told TheWrap that he grew up in a military household. He said, “I grew up in the military, my parents were vets.” He linked that to Reacher’s childhood on military bases, describing it this way:
Rank #2
- “There’s something nostalgic about that for me, looking back. So there are emotional ties that I have that I think Reacher and I share in a lot of ways.”
This is Ritchson describing why the character resonated with him as an actor. The interview does not connect it to the casting decision. Reading it as the reason he was passed over would go beyond what he said.
What the headline’s phrase does and does not establish
The headline “That’s Too Close to Home” frames the story as a revelation about a personal barrier. The interview text available for this article does not contain that phrase as Ritchson’s own wording, and it does not state a causal reason for the first-round decision. The headline is therefore best read as an editorial framing of the interview’s personal material, not a finding that the casting team rejected him for a reason tied to his background.

The headline also calls him a “former ‘Jack Reacher’ actor.” That label can mislead. Tom Cruise played the character in the film series. Ritchson is the star of the Prime Video series, which is based on Lee Child’s novels. TheWrap identifies Child’s Killing Floor as the novel adapted for Season 1.
Three separate stories that get mixed together
Several different reports involve Ritchson, Cruise, and Lee Child. They concern different events and should be kept apart.
Rank #4
| Story | Source and date | What it says | Connection to the casting decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-round casting pass and later rounds | TheWrap, Adam Chitwood, February 4, 2022 | Ritchson was not selected in the first round; a new casting director later brought new scenes to finalists; Ritchson estimates the process lasted six or seven months. | This is the casting account itself. No single cause is stated. |
| Ritchson’s letter for Tom Cruise | TVLine, Matt Webb Mitovich, December 19, 2023 | Ritchson says he gave executive producer Don Granger a letter of thanks to pass to Cruise. Granger reportedly declined, saying Cruise had moved on. The quote is Ritchson’s account of Granger’s words, not a direct interview with Granger. | None. It concerns contact with Cruise, not the audition decision. |
| Cruise’s departure from the film role | ABC News (Australia), November 19, 2018, reporting Lee Child’s comments | Child said Cruise would not continue in the role after fan criticism of the gap between Cruise’s build and the physical description of Reacher in the novels. | None. It concerns the film portrayal, not the Prime Video casting. |
The Cruise letter story is the one most often confused with the casting decision. The account is about a thank-you note, and it does not describe any role in the audition.

- Established: Ritchson was passed over in the first casting round, the process later presented new scenes to finalists, and he describes his military upbringing as connected to Reacher’s childhood.
- Established as his estimate only: The process lasted six or seven months.
- Not established: A specific reason, from producers or casting, for the first-round decision.
- Not established: That his personal background was a factor in that decision, or that the phrase “too close to home” is his own explanation.
