Alan Jackson’s daughter, Mattie Jackson Selecman, announced her engagement to Connor Smith in September 2022, four years after her first husband, Ben Selecman, died. Mattie and Smith married in May 2023, about eight months after announcing their engagement.

When did Mattie Jackson announce her engagement?
Mattie announced her engagement to Smith in September 2022. A contemporaneous report said Smith proposed in Palm Beach, Florida, during a trip celebrating his 30th birthday. The report quoted her Instagram caption: “Feeling overwhelmingly thankful, excited, and thrilled for this kind-of-surprise but so-fervently-prayed for ENGAGEMENT.”
What happened to Mattie’s first husband?
Ben Selecman died in September 2018 after falling on a boat dock and suffering traumatic brain injuries. Alan Jackson’s official release said Ben died 11 months into his marriage to Mattie.

How has Mattie spoken about grief?
In 2021, Mattie published Lemons on Friday: Trusting God through My Greatest Heartbreak with Thomas Nelson/W Publishing Group. The book recounts her experience of loss and grief. It offers readers a direct account from Mattie, rather than a general guide to bereavement.
That year, Mattie also co-wrote “Racing the Dark” with her father, who recorded the song. In the official announcement of the book and song collaboration, Alan Jackson said of his daughter’s response to grief: “I’m really surprised how well she was able to handle all that. I know I couldn’t have done what she’s done.”
