Rosario Dawson’s path to playing Ahsoka Tano began with genuine enthusiasm for Star Wars and a public fan-casting exchange—but a tweet did not land her the role by itself. Lucasfilm later cast her as Ahsoka in The Mandalorian, and she prepared by revisiting the character’s animated history and undertaking intensive martial-arts and fight training.
How Rosario Dawson’s interest in Ahsoka became public
Ahsoka Tano first appeared in the 2008 animated feature Star Wars: The Clone Wars as Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice. Dave Filoni helped create the character with George Lucas and Lucasfilm Animation, establishing a long animated history before Ahsoka appeared in live action.
Dawson was already a fan of The Clone Wars. In February 2017, she replied to a fan asking whether she would want to play Ahsoka: “Ummmm… yes please?! #AhsokaLives #AhsokaTano #StarWars.” In a 2020 interview with StarWars.com, Dawson said Lucasfilm staff noticed the exchange and forwarded it to Filoni. She also emphasized that “nothing happened for a very long time.”
The Television Academy’s 2023 account adds that fan artist Kode Abdo, known as BossLogic, shared artwork imagining Dawson as Ahsoka, which Filoni saw. These fan-casting moments made the idea visible; they do not establish that any one post caused Lucasfilm to hire her. The casting came later, as Lucasfilm considered live-action possibilities for The Mandalorian.

From animated legacy to live-action Ahsoka
Dawson’s first live-action portrayal of Ahsoka was in The Mandalorian in 2020. She approached a character already beloved by viewers with respect for Ashley Eckstein’s animated voice performance. Dawson told StarWars.com she went back to The Clone Wars and Rebels, as well as the broader saga, to understand how Ahsoka had changed over time.
That viewing was practical preparation as well as fandom. Dawson studied Ahsoka’s physicality, expressions, and way of speaking, looking for a live-action performance that felt continuous with the animated character without simply copying it. Lucasfilm’s official series page identifies the 2023 show as a continuation of Ahsoka’s story after the fall of the Empire: she investigates a new threat and reunites with Sabine Wren, her former apprentice.

What Dawson’s preparation involved
Martial arts and ambidextrous fighting
Playing Ahsoka meant building credible movement for a character who fights with lightsabers. The Television Academy reported that Dawson sharpened her martial-arts skills for two hours a day, seven days a week. Entertainment Weekly described months of training to fight ambidextrously. These are accounts of her preparation, not independently measured training logs.
Dawson’s early progress was judged in the studio, too. Recalling a training session, fight coordinator Ming Qiu told Entertainment Weekly, “That one didn’t make my eyes hurt.” The modest compliment captures the task: learning to move convincingly with both hands took repetition before it looked natural.

Costume tests and the physical demands of the role
The transformation also involved wearing Ahsoka’s costume and headpieces while moving. Dawson recalled a costume test in which she was “literally doing jumping jacks.” Her co-star Natasha Liu Bordizzo told the Television Academy that Dawson took a lightsaber to the face, got a black eye, laughed, and asked to keep shooting. Bordizzo also described her energy on set: “I don’t have a single memory of her looking tired, which is crazy considering we’re on the same schedule.”

After her appearance in The Mandalorian, Dawson took the title role in Lucasfilm’s Ahsoka, which premiered on Disney+ in August 2023. The story follows Ahsoka after the Empire’s fall as she investigates a new threat and reconnects with Sabine Wren. The journey from fan-casting to the series lead was a gradual one: public enthusiasm introduced the possibility, while Lucasfilm’s later casting and Dawson’s work carried it forward.

Disney said the first episode drew 14 million views in its first-week announcement and was the platform’s most-watched title globally that week. Disney defines a view as total stream time divided by the episode’s available runtime, so the figure is a company-reported streaming metric, not a count of 14 million unique people.
