Akira Toriyama’s legacy reaches beyond the global success of Dragon Ball: it includes the comic invention of Dr. Slump, a distinctive visual style carried into landmark video-game worlds, and stories that crossed national boundaries. Toriyama died on March 1, 2024, aged 68; Bird Studio and Capsule Corporation Tokyo announced his death on March 8, naming acute subdural hematoma as the cause. His work remains a vivid record of how one artist could move between comedy, adventure, manga, animation and games.
What made Toriyama’s work distinctive?
Toriyama’s comics could pair energetic action with absurd humor and expressive, immediately recognizable designs. The combination is central to how readers encountered both Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball: the stories offered momentum and spectacle, while comic interruptions and visual play kept them approachable. A Government of Japan cultural feature, drawing on comments by manga scholar Ito Yu, describes the appeal of Dragon Ball as a blend of story, dynamic battles, humor and Toriyama’s distinctive designs. Read the feature.
That balance helped make the work portable across audiences. The characters and action could be enjoyed as entertainment, while the visual designs gave the stories an identity that persisted beyond the page. Ito Yu told the Government of Japan: “While his work was a form of entertainment all could enjoy, I think its wide acclaim owed a lot to his artistic talent for crafting such high-quality works.”
What did Akira Toriyama create besides Dragon Ball?
Dr. Slump established his comic range
Before Dragon Ball, Toriyama created Dr. Slump, a comic series that VIZ’s official biography describes as popular from 1980. Its prominence matters to his legacy: his career was not simply a single long adventure series, but included an earlier comic work that demonstrated his appetite for eccentric characters and comedy. VIZ’s Toriyama biography and Dragon Ball page also dates Dragon Ball’s serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump to 1984–1995.

His designs helped define game worlds
Toriyama’s credited game-design work includes Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Tobal No. 1 and Blue Dragon, according to VIZ. His contribution to Dragon Quest is especially visible in the way character design became part of the series’ identity. Game designer Yuji Horii recalled in a Shueisha-published tribute: “You can say that the history of Dragon Quest exists with Toriyama-san’s character design.” Horii said he approached Toriyama to create illustrations for the game at launch after a recommendation from his editor. How did Dragon Ball reach audiences around the world?
Dragon Ball grew from a manga serialized over more than a decade into a franchise spanning manga, animation, films, games and other formats. The Government of Japan says the anime’s worldwide success helped mark the beginning of the Japanese anime and manga boom. That is a cultural interpretation, not a claim that one series alone caused the boom; it points to the scale of the audience the work reached and the role it played in drawing attention to Japanese popular culture.
The commercial scale is also documented, though the figure should be read as a dated publisher report rather than a live total. Toei Animation reported 260 million copies sold worldwide in a September 24, 2024 release. In that release, Toei described the franchise as including six episodic series, 21 feature films, mobile and video games, a trading card game, licensed merchandise and location-based entertainment. What do other creators say about his influence?
Toriyama’s influence is also reflected in testimony from peers. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda described his presence in a Shueisha-published tribute with the words: “His existence is like a mother tree.” The metaphor speaks to a creative influence that extended into manga and other industries, rather than offering a measurable ranking of artists. Taken together with Horii’s account of Dragon Quest, these tributes show how Toriyama’s impact was felt both by audiences and by creators working in different media.
