Air is a 2023 sports-business drama about Nike’s effort to sign rookie Michael Jordan and the deal that gave rise to the Air Jordan brand. Directed by Ben Affleck, it focuses on the executives and family members behind the partnership rather than presenting itself as a full biography of Jordan.
What is Air about?
The film follows Sonny Vaccaro, a Nike basketball executive trying to persuade the company to build its future around Michael Jordan, then a promising NBA rookie. The story centers on the negotiations and on the people who helped shape the decision, including Nike co-founder Phil Knight and Jordan’s mother, Deloris.
Skydance describes the film as a game-changing partnership between Jordan and Nike’s basketball division. The resulting Air Jordan line became the most visible legacy of the agreement. Skydance’s film page
Is Air based on a true story?
Yes. The film dramatizes Nike’s pursuit of Jordan and the real partnership behind Air Jordan. Its central people and business outcome are historical, but Air is a dramatic feature, not a documentary or a scene-by-scene record of events.

Why is Michael Jordan barely shown?
Jordan appears only near the end and is not shown face-on, according to TIME’s account of the film. Affleck described the choice to keep Jordan off-screen as deliberate in an NBA.com interview. That approach keeps the focus on the negotiation and the people around Jordan, rather than asking another actor to stand in for a figure whose public image is already so recognizable.
When was Air released, and where can you watch it?

The partnership portrayed in the film led to the Air Jordan basketball shoe line. That is the clearest physical-product connection to the story: the movie is about how Nike pursued Jordan, and Air Jordan became the brand associated with that agreement. The film’s historical account does not establish which current models are best for playing basketball, how they fit, or what they cost; those details vary by model and listing.
