The pictures were synthetic—not documentary photographs of the gatherings they depicted—and one was shared with a false story about Trump stopping his motorcade.
What the investigation found
BBC Panorama investigated fake images shared by Trump supporters. In its March 4, 2024 summary of the investigation, The Guardian reported that dozens of AI-generated photos showing Trump with Black people were being spread. The reporting described the images as apparently created by supporters; it found no evidence that they were tied to the Trump campaign. The Guardian’s summary of the BBC findings.
That distinction matters: supporters circulating or making images is not evidence that a candidate’s campaign produced, coordinated, or endorsed them. The reporting establishes no such campaign connection.
Two images and how they circulated
Trump with smiling Black women
According to Futurism’s account of BBC reporting, Florida radio host Mark Kaye created an image showing Trump with a group of smiling Black women and shared it to Facebook in November 2023. Kaye told the BBC, as quoted by The Guardian: “I’m not out there taking pictures of what’s really happening. I’m a storyteller.” He also said he was not claiming the image was accurate or presenting it as proof that Trump had attended a gathering with Black voters.

Trump on a porch with Black men
Futurism reported that an image depicting Trump on a porch with Black men appears to have first been shared to X in October 2023 by an account called “Trump History.” During later circulation, it was paired with a false claim that Trump had stopped his motorcade to take pictures with young men who waved him down. The image and its caption are separate claims: the caption’s story does not establish that the depicted scene happened. Futurism’s account of the images and their circulation.
How visual clues can—and cannot—help
Reports noted irregularities such as malformed or missing fingers in synthetic pictures. These clues can prompt closer scrutiny, but appearance alone does not establish who made an image, when it was made, or how it spread. Provenance requires more than spotting a visual flaw.

A separate image circulated in August 2024 illustrates the point without proving anything about the earlier BBC investigation’s images. Its creator, Sharika Soal, acknowledged it was AI-generated. In an AFP fact check, UC Berkeley professor and GetReal co-founder Hany Farid identified malformed hands and misshapen jacket details as telltale clues in that image. AFP also reported that his detection models flagged it as AI-generated. AFP’s August 8, 2024 fact check.

Cliff Albright, co-founder of Black Voters Matter, told the BBC: “There have been documented attempts to target disinformation to black communities again, especially younger black voters.” As quoted in The Guardian, that is Albright’s assessment of a broader pattern; it does not identify who commissioned these particular images or prove a coordinated effort behind them.

How to assess a viral political image
- Separate the picture from its caption. Ask whether the image itself is authentic and whether the accompanying story—such as the motorcade claim—has independent support.
- Look for the earliest traceable post. A first located share can help map circulation, but it does not necessarily identify the original creator.
- Check for creator statements and independent verification. An admission of AI generation or a named expert’s assessment can support a conclusion about a specific image; do not generalize it to other pictures.
- Keep attribution precise. A supporter’s post is not evidence of campaign production or approval. In this case, The Guardian’s account of BBC Panorama says investigators found no evidence tying the images to Trump’s campaign.
