It was the first direct-to-finals decision under the show’s new live-round rule—not the first Golden Buzzer in AGT history.
What happened on the live quarterfinal
The four-member Hakuna Matata Acrobats performed a balancing routine, with members climbing on top of one another. Contemporary coverage characterized the act as ambitious and dangerous. After the performance, Vergara praised the group and pressed her Live Show Golden Buzzer, securing its place in the finale. Yahoo Entertainment’s August 13, 2024 report, which republished an Entertainment Weekly report, covered the moment.
“This is definitely one of the most ambitious acts I’ve seen on AGT,” Vergara said. She also told the performers, “I mean, I can see the difference from the audition. You guys deserve to be here.” Judge Simon Cowell called it “one of the most difficult, dangerous acts we’ve seen on a live show.” These remarks are attributed in the contemporaneous report; a full episode transcript was not available in the sources reviewed.
What “direct pass to the finals” meant
Season 19 added a Golden Buzzer for the live rounds. A judge could use it on a designated night to advance an act directly to the finale, bypassing the remaining elimination stages. Vergara’s decision gave the acrobats that guaranteed spot.

| Golden Buzzer | Stage | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Audition Golden Buzzer | Auditions | Advances an act to the live shows. |
| Season 19 Live Show Golden Buzzer | Live rounds | Advances an act directly to the finals. |
The distinction is central to the “first-ever” description: Vergara made the first direct-to-finals choice under the new live-show rule. It does not mean she was the first AGT judge ever to use a Golden Buzzer. NBC Insider’s explanation of the Golden Buzzer rules distinguishes the live-show mechanism from the audition version.
How the season 19 finale field was set
The contemporaneous account described a ten-act finale: four acts earned places through Live Show Golden Buzzers, while six advanced through the competition. The Hakuna Matata Acrobats were one of the four acts receiving the live-round shortcut. TV Insider’s season 19 format explainer also describes how the live Golden Buzzer worked.
