K. Satchidanandan wrote “A Man with a Door” in Malayalam and translated its English version himself. The poem follows a man carrying a door through a city in search of the house it belongs to; as the door imagines what it might become, its hopes shift from a home and the heavens toward a simple act of shelter.

Who wrote “A Man with a Door”?

The poem is by K. Satchidanandan, who also translated the English version from Malayalam. Poetry International credits the translation to Satchidanandan in 2011 and identifies While I Write: New and Selected Poems, published by HarperCollins in New Delhi, as its source. Scroll’s poem page, published January 1, 2017, likewise says he translated it from Malayalam and notes that the selection was curated by Rohini Kejriwal and published with the poet’s permission.

What happens in the poem?

A man carries a door through the city, looking for the house to which it belongs. The door imagines the life it could make possible: family and friends passing through it, then a passage open to the whole world. Its fantasy grows grander still, reaching toward heaven, before the poem abruptly brings it down to earth: the “owner of hell” is waiting for it.

After that reversal, the door’s wish becomes modest and humane. It imagines becoming a leafy tree that could shade the homeless man carrying it. The final image returns to the man walking through the city, with a star beside him. The poem offers no explanation for the star, and it does not say that the man has found a house.

How can the door’s changing hopes be read?

A home that remains out of reach

The door ordinarily marks an entrance into a home. Here, however, it is detached from any house, and the man has to carry it through the city while searching for where it belongs. That image invites a reading of homelessness as more than the absence of a roof: the object associated with entry and belonging is present, but the home itself is missing.

Ambition meets hardship

The door’s imagined future expands from everyday welcome to universal openness and heavenly grandeur. The waiting “owner of hell” reverses that ascent with a sharp, unsettling turn. Rather than settling on a single explanation, the poem lets the shift expose the distance between grand hopes and the precarious reality surrounding the man.

From grandeur to care

The door’s last wish is not to become a heavenly entrance or a monument. It wants to become a tree and give shade to the person who carries it. The change in scale makes care practical: the door cannot provide the man with a home in the poem, but its imagined transformation could offer some relief along the way.

A closing image, not a resolution

The star walking with the man adds a note of wonder after the door’s inward turn toward compassion. It can suggest companionship, hope or a glimpse of the extraordinary in an ordinary city walk, but the image does not resolve the man’s material situation. Satchidanandan leaves the tension between hardship and wonder intact.

Where has the poem appeared?

The sources identify more than one publication context, so neither should be treated as the poem’s sole book appearance. Poetry International links its 2011 English translation to While I Write: New and Selected Poems. The Punch included the poem in its November 1, 2016 selection “Cactus and other poems,” excerpted from The Missing RIB: Collected Poems, 1973–2015, with permission from Poetrywala.
