The detour gives the central Teen mystery a personal history, but whether that history earns the pause depends on how much you value character context over immediate plot movement.
Spoilers ahead: The review below discusses Billy Kaplan’s identity and the episode’s backstory revelations.
What happens in “Familiar By Thy Side”?
The sixth episode of season 1, released October 16, 2024, shifts attention from the Road’s immediate challenges to William Kaplan and the history behind the Teen traveling with Agatha. Its backstory structure revisits earlier events from Billy’s point of view, reframing what viewers have seen rather than simply pushing the group farther along the Road.
The episode’s recollections begin around William’s bar mitzvah and include a palm-reading encounter with Lilia. That material connects his personal history to the show’s earlier events and to the questions surrounding Teen’s relationship with Agatha. For a recap of the episode’s story beats, see TV Guide’s episode 6 recap.

Does Billy’s backstory justify the detour?
On revelation value, the hour makes a strong case for its change of perspective: Billy is no longer only an intriguing presence whose motives need decoding. The flashback gives the mystery an emotional and biographical frame, making his connection to the season’s events easier to consider as a personal story rather than just a puzzle.
But the episode’s method has a cost. Because it revisits familiar material, some of its runtime can feel like an interruption to the Road plot instead of a clean advance. The A.V. Club’s review objects to the return to known events as momentum-stalling, while GamesRadar+ sees the episode as a step up from the preceding installment and praises Joe Locke’s work. Those are distinct critical judgments, not evidence of a uniform reception. Read the A.V. Club review and GamesRadar+ review for their full arguments.

How well does Joe Locke carry the Billy-centered episode?
The perspective shift asks Locke to anchor an episode whose dramatic tension comes less from the next obstacle on the Road than from understanding Billy’s history and intentions. GamesRadar+’s praise of his performance supports the episode’s character-first approach: the material has a performer to hold its focus even when the structure circles back over events viewers already know.
Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing reproduces a positive review that describes the balance between the show’s witchy atmosphere and “the very human story at the heart of Billy’s.” That phrasing belongs to the review displayed on Rotten Tomatoes, not to director Gandja Monteiro. The listing identifies Monteiro as director, but it is not a substitute for a complete official credits record. See the Rotten Tomatoes episode listing.

Is episode 6 worth watching?
Yes, if Billy’s identity and history are the questions keeping you invested in the series. “Familiar By Thy Side” adds meaningful context and gives the Teen mystery a more personal center. If your priority is watching the Road’s events unfold without a pause, the extensive return to earlier scenes may feel like the season has eased off the gas. Its value rests on the same trade-off: character revelation in exchange for forward momentum.
