Big Daddy is the Adam Sandler comedy that makes the strongest case for a follow-up after Happy Gilmore 2—not because a sequel has been announced, but because its central relationship leaves room for a new story. Sony identifies Big Daddy as a 1999 film about Sonny Koufax, a 32-year-old who has spent his life avoiding responsibility. A sequel could ask what happens after an unlikely caregiver grows up. There is no confirmed Big Daddy sequel or Netflix rights deal.
Why Big Daddy is the sequel candidate
The case for Big Daddy is more than a familiar title. Its story gives Adam Sandler a character with somewhere to go: Sonny Koufax begins as a man who dodges responsibility, then is pushed into caring for a child. Sony’s official synopsis establishes that starting point, which offers a natural foundation for a later chapter without requiring the original comic setup to be repeated. Sony Pictures’ Big Daddy synopsis.
The sequel pitch is an editorial argument, not a report of active development. A follow-up could explore how Sonny handles the lasting responsibilities and consequences of his surrogate-parent role. That is a possible story direction, not a confirmed plot.
Is Big Daddy actually a sleeper hit?
Calling the 1999 film a “sleeper” needs a distinction. Big Daddy was already a substantial theatrical success: a 2024 anniversary-era Entertainment Weekly interview republished by Yahoo reported a $41 million domestic opening and $234 million worldwide gross. Those are figures reported in that interview, not a newly verified box-office accounting. The present-day sleeper-hit framing refers instead to renewed streaming attention.

A 2025 report indexed by IMDb, citing FlixPatrol, said the movie was receiving a streaming bump on HBO Max in more than a dozen countries. That is a third-party chart observation, not an official HBO Max audience figure. It does not establish total viewers, how long the attention lasted, or how many people would watch a sequel. Why Netflix is a plausible partner—and what that does not prove
Netflix has released Happy Gilmore 2, and its corporate site documents multiple film deals with Sandler and Happy Madison, naming Big Daddy among Sandler’s established hits. That history makes Netflix a plausible home for a proposed reunion with Sonny Koufax. Netflix Tudum’s Happy Gilmore 2 page and About Netflix’s announcement of four more Sandler films.

But a working relationship is not proof of ownership or a new deal. The available information does not establish that Netflix owns Big Daddy, has secured sequel rights, or is developing a follow-up. The streaming chart report likewise does not establish Netflix viewership for the original.
What Happy Gilmore’s afterlife can—and cannot—tell us
The comparison is useful as a sign that a Sandler comedy can stay in circulation, not as proof that every familiar title warrants another film. The Associated Press describes Happy Gilmore as a cult comedy whose audience has carried it through DVDs and television reruns. The article reports $39 million at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the original, and filmmaker Benny Safdie says, “I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen that movie.” That kind of long afterlife helps explain the appeal of revisiting Sandler characters; it does not demonstrate demand for a Big Daddy sequel. What would make a Big Daddy sequel worth making?
- A new stage for Sonny: Build on his growth rather than simply replaying the original’s accidental-caregiver premise.
- A story with consequences: Make the years of responsibility matter to Sonny’s relationships and choices, rather than treating the passage of time as a reference for fans.
- Evidence beyond nostalgia: Treat reported chart activity as a reason to consider the idea, not as proof of a large or sustained audience.
- A real production path: Confirm rights and a creative commitment before presenting the sequel as a Netflix project.
For readers who want to revisit the original, availability depends on territory and can change; the sources cited here do not establish a current streaming service for every country.
