Season 4 of Fire Country is finding a stronger rhythm through Chief Brett Richards, played by Shawn Hatosy. He first seems poised to complicate life for Bode and Sharon, but his most effective scenes show him steadying Station 42’s changing leadership and helping other characters carry the weight of their choices.
Why Richards changes the feel of Season 4
Jeffrey Harris’s March 22, 2026, assessment is that Richards brings “much-needed calmness, stability, and brutal honesty” to the series. That is a critic’s judgment, not an audience-measurement claim. The case for it comes from how Richards behaves when Station 42’s authority is unsettled: rather than simply asserting himself, he recognizes what the people around him need.
The shift follows Vince’s death. Manny Perez has to take on greater authority, while Jake is not ready for the chief role. Richards supports Manny’s appointment and sees that distinction clearly. His experience lets him guide the station without treating leadership as a contest for the top position.
Richards’ strongest scenes are about helping others lead
He backs Manny without taking over
Manny’s promotion brings a difficult emotional burden: his orders can send firefighters into danger. Richards helps him face that responsibility. The value of the scenes is not just that an experienced chief offers reassurance; it is that Manny’s struggle remains central, and Richards helps him grow into the job rather than replacing him in it.

He gives Bode perspective
In “The Life of a Firefighter,” Richards counsels Bode about Tyler Mackenzie, the young boy connected to the Zabel Ridge fire. That conversation extends Richards’ role beyond station politics. He can offer Bode a measured perspective shaped by experience, making him a potential mentor rather than a one-note obstacle.
These moments are the foundation of Harris’s argument that the show is improving: Richards’ authority creates space for Manny and Bode to develop. The CBS Season 4 episode guide lists the official episode sequence and descriptions for viewers who want to locate episodes by title.

Richards’ personal story could give the role more depth
Richards wants to make Edgewater his home and reconnect with his estranged daughter after the death of his firefighter wife. That history offers a different kind of story from Station 42’s emergencies: a man with professional experience still has unresolved losses and relationships. If the series develops it, Richards could become more than a useful mentor to Manny and Bode.
It remains a possibility, not a confirmed long-term casting plan. Harris’s article expresses hope that Hatosy will continue, but it does not establish that Richards is a permanent cast member or cite a contract or casting announcement.

Streaming catalogs and access can change by date and location, so check the service in your region for current availability. CBS describes the series as inspired by Max Thieriot’s experience growing up in Northern California fire country; that background explains the premise, but the case for Richards’ impact rests on his scenes in Season 4.
