MTV’s dedicated international 24-hour music-video channels ended on January 1, 2026, after 44 years. The flagship MTV brand continues, but as an entertainment and reality-TV network rather than a wall-to-wall music-video service.
MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live were among the feeds that signed off in markets including the UK, Ireland, France, Poland, Australia and Brazil. The final broadcast echoed MTV’s beginning: The Buggles’ “Video Killed The Radio Star.”

Is MTV completely dead?
No. What ended was MTV’s international music-channel operation, not every part of the MTV brand. The flagship channel remains on air with reality, competition and pop-culture programming. Some U.S. music services also remained, while MTV HD in the UK continued with an entertainment focus.
The January 1 shutdown was therefore regional and specific: the dedicated linear feeds built around scheduled music videos disappeared, while MTV’s entertainment franchises, website, events and Video Music Awards continued.

Which MTV music channels closed?
| Channel | What happened on January 1, 2026 | Geography reported |
|---|---|---|
| MTV Music | Dedicated music-video feed closed | UK, Ireland, France, Poland, Australia and Brazil were among the affected markets |
| MTV 80s | Dedicated music-video feed closed | International markets served by the feed |
| MTV 90s | Dedicated music-video feed closed | International markets served by the feed |
| Club MTV | Dedicated dance-music feed closed | International markets served by the feed |
| MTV Live | Dedicated music-performance feed closed | International markets served by the feed |
Channel lineups differed by country and television provider, so a feed’s disappearance in one market does not prove that every MTV-branded service vanished worldwide.
What was the last song MTV played?
The closing music channels signed off with The Buggles’ “Video Killed The Radio Star,” the same song MTV used for its first U.S. broadcast in 1981. It made the shutdown a deliberate bookend: a song about one media technology replacing another became the final image of the linear music-video era.
Why did MTV stop playing music videos?
The business case for a 24-hour music-video channel eroded as viewers moved to on-demand streaming, social video and algorithmic recommendations. Those services let people choose a song immediately, replay it, skip it and discuss it, whereas a linear channel required waiting for a scheduled clip.
MTV’s measurable UK audience collapsed
AFP reporting cited Barb figures showing that MTV Music reached about 1.3 million UK households in July 2025. MTV UK and Ireland’s broader music-channel package reached more than 10 million homes in 2001. The figures are not identical products, but they show the scale of the audience decline facing scheduled music television.

Programming costs and corporate pressure
AFP reported that Paramount Skydance planned to wind down international music broadcasting by the end of 2025 as the company faced streaming competition and sought lower-cost operations after the merger. Cutting specialist linear feeds reduced distribution and programming expense while leaving the larger MTV entertainment brand available for shows, advertising and events.
The cultural conditions changed
Kirsty Fairclough, a professor of screen studies at Manchester Metropolitan University, said “the conditions that made MTV ‘revolutionary’ simply ‘don’t exist anymore’.” She also said digital platforms had “completely refigured how we engage with music and images.” MTV once controlled a scarce broadcast window; today, music discovery is abundant, searchable and interactive.
What MTV changed before the channels disappeared
MTV did more than schedule videos. It created a shared visual-music ritual and made the video jockey, or VJ, a recognizable on-screen cultural role. Its influence spread through music, fashion, film, youth identity and celebrity television.
- It presented the world premiere of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as a major television event.
- It carried a 16-hour Live Aid broadcast in 1985, helping establish music television as a platform for global live coverage.
- It launched the MTV Video Music Awards, which became one of pop culture’s most visible annual ceremonies.
- Its presenters and visual style helped turn music videos into part of a shared generational conversation rather than disposable promotion.
James Hyman, who produced MTV Europe dance shows, summarized the change bluntly: “The ‘M’ stood for music, and that’s gone.” Former VJ Simone Angel said the shutdown was the moment audiences realized the brand “means too much to us.”

What MTV still broadcasts
Paramount’s official MTV service continues to market the network as a youth-entertainment brand. Its featured franchises include:
- Jersey Shore Family Vacation
- RuPaul’s Drag Race
- The Challenge
- Love & Hip Hop Atlanta
- Catfish
- Cribs
The global Video Music Awards also remain part of MTV’s operation. In a September 10, 2026 release, Paramount said Snoop Dogg would host the September 27 VMAs. In the United States, the ceremony airs on CBS, simulcasts on MTV and streams on Paramount+; internationally, Paramount said it would be available on Paramount+ and MTV the following day. Exact availability can vary by territory and rights agreement.
Can you still watch old MTV shows?
The standalone MTV app has been discontinued. MTV Support says viewers can continue through their television provider or at mtv.com, and that “many seasons” are available on Paramount+. The catalog is territory-dependent, so check the current Paramount+ listing and your local MTV service for a specific series or season.
MTV then versus music discovery now
| Factor | MTV’s classic linear model | Streaming and social video |
|---|---|---|
| Immediacy | Viewers waited for a scheduled video or show | Search and play on demand |
| Interactivity | VJs and channel programming guided a shared broadcast | Users comment, share, remix and receive personalized recommendations |
| Editorial gatekeeping | Channel programmers selected the rotation | Platform algorithms, labels, creators and social signals shape discovery |
| Geographic availability | Dependent on local channel carriage and regional feeds | Still varies by licensing, but services can reach viewers without a traditional music channel |
| Legacy content | Music videos, VJ links, premieres and live television events | On-demand libraries, clips, creator content and selected live events |
What the shutdown means
MTV has not disappeared; it has separated from the format that defined its name. The 24-hour music-video feeds ended because scheduled television could no longer compete with the speed, choice and participation offered by digital platforms. The surviving MTV is principally a reality, entertainment and events brand, while its music-video legacy lives on through archives, awards, retrospectives and the cultural memory of a channel that once made millions of viewers watch the same clip at the same time.
