OBS Studio is the clearest free starting point if you want flexible screen, gameplay, webcam, or narration recording and are willing to configure your setup. Streamlabs Desktop is another free option with bundled creator tools. Bandicam offers useful recording features, but its free Bandicam 2027 version limits each recording to five minutes, so it is not a practical free choice for a full-length tutorial.
Compare the three options at a glance
| Software | Cost and platform information | Recording fit | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Free and open source; Windows, Mac, and Linux, according to the OBS Project. | Flexible scenes and sources for screen demonstrations, gameplay, webcam, and other multi-source recordings, with an audio mixer. | Its configuration options mean you will need to set up scenes and sources; no comparative ease-of-use testing is established. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Streamlabs describes basic tools as free. Its FAQ also lists an optional paid Ultra bundle. The getting-started page covers its desktop software; a complete operating-system matrix is not stated there. FAQ · Getting started. | Recording and screen recording alongside streaming and bundled creator tools. | Some features are optional paid extras; check current tier details before relying on a particular feature. |
| Bandicam | Free tier and paid full version. Its product page lists Windows and Mac solutions; verify current system requirements. The page displayed $33.26 for one PC when accessed in 2026, a dated listing rather than a durable quote. Choose based on what you need to record
For a flexible free recorder: OBS Studio
The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as free and open-source software for video recording and live streaming. It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. You can assemble scenes from sources such as windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards, then mix audio with per-source filters including noise gate, noise suppression, and gain. Plugins and scripts offer additional flexibility.
That breadth makes OBS a strong fit for a tutorial that combines a screen capture, webcam, and voice, or gameplay with commentary. The trade-off is setup: you choose and arrange scenes and sources yourself. This is a feature description, not a claim that OBS is easier, faster, or better-performing than the alternatives.
For bundled creator tools: Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs says its basic tools are free and that Desktop supports recording, including screen recording for YouTube videos, tutorials, and work recordings. Its FAQ lists free widgets, overlay themes, alerts, tip pages, and Cloudbot moderation tools; Streamlabs Ultra is an optional paid bundle that includes features such as multistreaming and premium overlays. If you prefer recording software with creator and streaming tools in the same product, compare the current tier details against the features you actually plan to use.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For recording features with a limited free trial: Bandicam
Bandicam lists screen, game, webcam, and audio recording, plus screen annotation, webcam overlay, trimming, transcription, and Smart Zoom. It also describes capturing game audio and voice together for commentary. Its free/full comparison distinguishes the recording file from an edited export: free recordings are listed without a recording watermark, while free edited exports may carry one. The five-minute limit applies to each free video or audio-only recording, so it rules out making a single uninterrupted long tutorial on the free tier.
Match the software to your recording workflow
- Screen tutorial or demonstration: OBS gives you configurable window and browser sources, text, and audio mixing. Streamlabs Desktop supports screen recording as well.
- Gameplay with voice commentary: OBS can mix sources and apply audio filters; Bandicam specifically lists simultaneous game-audio and voice recording, but its free recordings stop at five minutes each.
- Webcam plus screen: OBS supports webcam sources, while Bandicam lists webcam recording and overlay. Streamlabs Desktop supports screen recording, but confirm that its current feature set matches your intended camera layout.
- Linux: OBS explicitly lists Linux support. The cited Streamlabs information does not establish a full OS matrix, and Bandicam’s product page lists Windows and Mac solutions.
- Audio: OBS provides per-source mixer controls and filters. Bandicam lists audio recording. A USB microphone is optional for narration or commentary; none of these product descriptions makes buying new audio hardware a requirement.
Start recording without buying extra gear
- Pick the capture sources. Decide whether the video needs a screen or game capture, webcam, narration, or a combination. In OBS, build a scene from the corresponding sources; in Streamlabs Desktop, use its recording or screen-recording workflow; in Bandicam, choose the relevant screen, game, webcam, or audio mode.
- Set up voice deliberately. Select the microphone you already have, if recording narration. In OBS, use the audio mixer and its source filters as needed. Record a short check to hear whether the voice is intelligible alongside system or game audio.
- Make a brief test recording. Check that the intended screen, camera, and audio are present before recording the full video. This catches an omitted source or muted microphone without relying on unverified performance or quality comparisons.
- Check your rights before recording or publishing. Capture only content you have the right to use. Copyright and platform rules depend on the material and your circumstances; software features do not grant permission to reuse footage, music, or other people’s work.
When your goal is a 24/7 YouTube loop instead
Recording software creates a video file on your computer. If you want uploaded recordings to keep a YouTube channel live as a continuous stream, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera.
