But the comparison crosses a Nielsen measurement change, and the linear figures exclude HBO Max simulcast viewing. They show a downturn in reported linear ratings—not a complete count of AEW’s audience, and not proof of one cause.
How much did Dynamite’s reported ratings fall?
Wrestlenomics’ January 6, 2026 report of Nielsen-derived ratings compared quarterly averages for Dynamite:
| Measure | Q4 2024 average | Q4 2025 average | Reported change |
|---|---|---|---|
| P2+ total audience | 610,000 viewers | 496,000 viewers | Down 19% year over year |
| P18-49 rating | 0.19 | 0.09 | Down 53% year over year |
P2+ is the reported total audience measure; P18-49 is a rating for viewers aged 18 to 49. They are different measures, so the 53% figure does not mean total viewership fell by 53%. Both figures describe quarterly averages of the reported linear audience, not every episode or AEW viewing on every platform.
Why is the year-over-year comparison hard to interpret?
Nielsen changed how it measures TV audiences
Nielsen began using its Big Data + Panel method in fall 2025. Wrestlenomics identifies September 26, 2025 as the point from which AEW ratings use the new method; earlier ratings used panel-only measurement. That means the Q4 year-over-year comparison spans two measurement approaches, rather than providing a like-for-like before-and-after test.

Nielsen described Big Data + Panel as combining its representative persons panel with data from cable and satellite set-top boxes and smart TVs. Nielsen said those data sources covered 45 million households and 75 million devices, alongside a U.S. persons panel of more than 42,000 homes and 100,000 people. Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao called the change “a once in a generation enhancement for the industry” and Nielsen characterized the method as its most accurate to date; those are Nielsen’s own descriptions, not an independent assessment of how accurately it captures AEW viewers.
Wrestlenomics also reported lower measurements for wrestling programs after the methodology change. That makes measurement a relevant qualification, but the available figures do not show how much of Dynamite’s year-over-year difference it explains. The reported decline is real as a comparison of the published figures; its size cannot be treated as a clean estimate of audience loss under an unchanged measurement system.

The Nielsen figures do not include the Max simulcast
WBD told Wrestlenomics in October 2025 that “AEW’s Dynamite and Collision linear viewership information reported by Nielsen (still) does not include HBO Max streaming viewership.” The P2+ and P18-49 figures above therefore describe linear viewing, not a combined total of linear and streaming viewers.
That exclusion does not establish that streaming made up for the linear decline. There is no consistent public series in the cited reporting that compares Max and linear viewers over time, so the size or direction of any change in Dynamite’s combined audience cannot be calculated from these figures.

Does this mean AEW is losing viewers?
It means the reported linear averages were lower in that quarter-to-quarter-year comparison. It does not, by itself, establish that AEW’s total audience across TV and streaming fell by the same amount. Nor does it identify why the linear figures changed.
Claims that booking, roster changes, competition, or fan satisfaction caused the decline would require separate evidence. The ratings comparison alone cannot distinguish those explanations from changes in measurement, distribution, or the wider TV-viewing environment.

How much does the decline reflect cable’s broader downturn?
AEW’s linear ratings sit within a shrinking cable and pay-TV landscape. The Associated Press reported Nielsen-attributed figures showing that 87% of U.S. homes had a cable or satellite subscription in 2015, compared with 47% in 2023, as viewing shifted toward streaming. WBD also reported continued declines in domestic linear pay-TV subscribers and audiences in its Q2 2026 results, including a 10% decrease in domestic linear pay-TV subscribers and a 17% decline in its domestic audience.
Those figures provide industry context, not a formula for explaining AEW’s ratings. WBD’s company-wide audience figures are not specific to Dynamite, and the household subscription figures do not reveal how many AEW viewers stopped watching, changed platforms, or were measured differently. The available evidence does not quantify how much cord-cutting or broader linear-TV decline contributed to AEW’s results.

What does WBD’s AEW reach claim measure?
In its October 2024 media-rights announcement, WBD said AEW programming would continue on TBS and TNT and added Max distribution, including live simulcasts and a library. WBD also said AEW programming had reached more than 33 million fans that year and that Dynamite was Wednesday’s number-one cable entertainment program among P18-49.
Those are WBD’s claims about its stated timeframe and distribution context. “Reached more than 33 million fans” is not the same measure as an average audience for a Dynamite episode, and the ranking among Wednesday cable entertainment programs is not a claim that the show led all TV or streaming. Neither claim contradicts the later quarterly linear averages.
Quick Recap
What can be concluded from the numbers?
- Dynamite’s reported Q4 2025 linear P2+ average and P18-49 rating were below their Q4 2024 counterparts.
- The comparison crosses Nielsen’s move from panel-only measurement to Big Data + Panel, making it difficult to isolate the amount of change attributable to viewing rather than measurement.
- The Nielsen linear figures exclude Max simulcast viewing, so they are not an all-platform audience total.
- The wider decline in linear TV is relevant context, but these figures do not establish a specific cause for AEW’s decline.
