Yes: the available figures support calling CM Punk a major draw for AEW, particularly after his August 2021 return. The evidence includes a rapid sellout at Chicago’s United Center, reported growth in pay-per-view and merchandise, and AEW president Tony Khan’s comments about business highs. But these measures have different definitions, and Khan discussed Punk alongside Bryan Danielson. They show strong interest around Punk’s arrival, not a precise or exclusive measure of his impact.
What the numbers say—and what they measure
There is no single “draw” number. A live crowd measures attendance at one event; television ratings measure viewers under a particular ratings system; pay-per-view (PPV) figures are reported estimates of purchases; and shirt sales count merchandise transactions. Taken together, the available reports make a credible case that Punk attracted substantial interest. They do not establish how much of AEW’s broader business growth he caused.
| Measure | Reported figure | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| United Center attendance | 15,316 attendees, reported by 411MANIA in 2021; the show was described as sold out. | Strong live interest in Punk’s return episode. The report’s figure is secondary reporting; attendance should not be treated as interchangeable with tickets sold or distributed. |
| AEW business metrics | Khan said at least six metrics had risen since Punk and then Danielson joined; he named all-time highs in PPV, digital performance, and live-event attendance. | An executive’s account of company performance during a period that included both signings, not a Punk-only finding. |
| All Out 2021 PPV buys | More than 200,000, reported by ComicBook.com in 2021; a later Wrestling Observer estimate reported by F4WOnline put the total at about 215,000. | Evidence of strong interest in the event, but both figures are reported rather than an audited public count. |
| Punk’s first AEW shirt | More than 100,000 sales, attributed to Khan by ComicBook.com in September 2021. | Historical merchandise demand; it does not establish current sales or availability. |
Did CM Punk boost AEW ratings?
The evidence here does not provide a definitive audience total or demographic rating for Punk’s debut. Contemporary coverage discussed ratings, and Khan later referred to “record TV ratings” in comments about Punk, but the available sources do not include a primary ratings release that would support a precise, independently verified figure or a like-for-like comparison with the prior episode.
That distinction matters: an executive’s public attribution is relevant evidence, but it is not the same as a published ratings dataset. Without comparable figures and a clear measurement definition, it is safer to say Punk’s arrival coincided with strong audience interest than to assign a specific ratings increase to him.

How strong was the live demand for Punk’s return?
Punk returned to AEW on its August 2021 United Center episode in Chicago. 411MANIA reported a sold-out crowd of 15,316, while Tony Khan was quoted by Wrestling Inc. as saying AEW set a United Center attendance record. The report supports the conclusion that the event drew exceptional live interest; its exact count should remain attributed to secondary reporting rather than presented as an audited ticket total.
Company-wide figures offer context, but not a Punk-specific comparison. Wrestlenomics estimated 205,000 AEW ticket sales across 36 events in 2021. Its method applied a 9% adjustment to ticket-distribution estimates, so this is a retrospective estimate for the company’s events overall—not a count of Punk-driven sales or a direct measure of the United Center show.

What do the PPV estimates show?
ComicBook.com reported in September 2021 that All Out 2021 drew more than 200,000 PPV buys, citing Khan’s comments. In 2023, F4WOnline reported a Wrestling Observer estimate of about 215,000 buys. The two figures are broadly consistent as reports of a highly successful event, but neither should be described as an audited disclosure.
All Out took place after Punk’s return, and the event’s card and wider AEW roster also contributed to its appeal. These estimates support the view that AEW had strong PPV demand during the period; by themselves, they cannot isolate how many purchases Punk generated.

What did AEW and Khan say about the business impact?
In October 2021, Wrestling Inc. quoted Khan describing a rise in at least six business metrics since Punk and then Bryan Danielson joined AEW. He said: “We’ve had our all-time record for pay-per-view. Those digital numbers, live event attendance – all-time highs.” The context is important: Khan credited a period that included two prominent signings, so the statement does not quantify Punk’s individual contribution.
ComicBook.com also attributed more than 100,000 sales of Punk’s first AEW shirt to Khan in September 2021. That is a concrete historical merchandise claim, but it is not evidence that the same shirt remains available or that demand continues at that level.

How does AEW’s later scale compare?
AEW announced that All In London in 2023 drew 81,035 fans from more than 70 countries and grossed more than $10 million, making it the company’s highest-grossing event to that point. Those are figures from AEW’s official announcement, and they show the scale the company later reached. They do not establish that Punk caused that success or provide a like-for-like comparison with the 2021 United Center episode.
Punk’s separate 2023 return was announced for the premiere of AEW Collision at the United Center on June 17. That return should not be confused with his 2021 AEW debut: they were distinct appearances, and the 2023 All In figures are later company context rather than a measure of either Punk return’s effect.

Verdict: was CM Punk a big draw for AEW?
Yes. The rapid United Center sellout, reported All Out PPV estimates, historical shirt sales, and Khan’s account of business highs all support describing Punk as a major AEW draw, especially in the immediate aftermath of his 2021 return. The evidence is persuasive in combination, but it does not prove a single-person cause or supply a controlled comparison of what AEW would have done without him.
