Ae Watan Mere Watan has a compelling subject: Usha Mehta’s underground radio effort during the 1942 Quit India Movement. The film’s patriotic intent is clear, but its tribute does not consistently become gripping drama. India Today’s Zinia Bandyopadhyay judged the screenplay thin and criticized the dialogue and direction; that is one critic’s assessment, but it captures the gap between the force of the story and the film’s execution.

What is Ae Watan Mere Watan about?

Directed by Kannan Iyer, who wrote the film with Darab Farooqui, this 2024 Hindi-language historical drama follows Usha Mehta and the underground radio station she helps operate during the Quit India Movement. Amazon describes it as inspired by real events and as a homage to unsung heroes, a framing that signals dramatization rather than a documentary reconstruction. Amazon’s announcement identifies Sara Ali Khan as Usha, with Sachin Khedekar, Abhay Verma, Sparsh Shrivastav, Alexx O’Nell and Anand Tiwari in pivotal roles, and Emraan Hashmi in a special guest appearance.

The premise gives the film an inherently cinematic tool: a radio broadcast can carry a message beyond the reach of authorities, while putting its makers at risk. That tension could make each transmission feel like a consequential act. The central question for the drama is whether the film makes the station’s work—and Usha’s commitment to it—feel like a developing struggle, rather than mainly a vehicle for patriotic sentiment.

Does the film make Usha’s conviction feel earned?

The subject matter supplies urgency, but a powerful historical premise cannot do all the work of character development. The film needs to show how Usha’s choices acquire meaning and what they cost her; otherwise, resolve can register as a declared virtue rather than something the drama has made the viewer feel. In this account of the film, the tribute’s sincerity is more evident than the dramatic progression needed to give that sincerity lasting impact.

Bandyopadhyay’s India Today review, published March 21, 2024, gives the film 2 out of 5 stars. She describes its screenplay as “paper-thin,” criticizes the dialogue and direction, and finds Sara Ali Khan’s effort earnest but of limited impact. Those are the reviewer’s judgments, not a universal verdict. They also point to a useful distinction: an actor’s commitment may be apparent, yet the writing and direction still determine whether a character’s inner life and decisions come through. Read the India Today review.

Does radio work as drama, or mainly as a patriotic symbol?

Radio is more than period detail here: it is the film’s central dramatic idea. A clandestine station can turn the act of speaking into a conflict between public communication and personal danger. When broadcasts are staged as consequential choices, the medium itself can generate suspense and reveal character. When they chiefly serve as expressions of patriotic feeling, the station risks feeling symbolic rather than dramatically active.

That distinction explains why the film’s premise can remain affecting even when its execution feels less forceful. Its subject points toward a story about courage communicated through a fragile medium; the film’s challenge is to make the mechanics and consequences of that communication as compelling as the ideal it represents.

How should viewers understand its historical claims?

Ae Watan Mere Watan presents itself as inspired by real events and as a tribute to Usha Mehta and other unsung heroes. That is not the same as claiming every scene, line or timeline detail is documented history. The available film and classification records establish its framing and subject, but do not verify scene-by-scene accuracy or the details of the Congress Radio operation. It is best approached as a dramatized historical tribute, not a substitute for a historical account.

Is Ae Watan Mere Watan worth watching?

It may appeal to viewers interested in Usha Mehta, the Quit India Movement, or stories of resistance using communication and media. Its central idea gives the film a meaningful reason to exist, while the India Today review’s criticism of the screenplay, dialogue and direction reflects why the experience may feel less powerful than its subject deserves. Viewers seeking tightly developed character drama or a documentary-style reconstruction should calibrate expectations accordingly.

Prime Video announced the film for its service from March 21, 2024; streaming availability can vary by territory. The British Board of Film Classification lists an approximate runtime of 133 minutes and advises that it contains strong violence, including shootings, torture and police violence against protesters.
