In 2017–18, six Indian Navy officers sailed INSV Tarini around the world on Navika Sagar Parikrama. Their 254-day voyage covered more than 22,000 nautical miles, crossed all longitudes and the Equator twice, and included five port calls. The achievement rested not only on the route, but on years of training and the crew’s ability to keep sailing, repairing and supporting one another far from help.
What was Navika Sagar Parikrama?
Navika Sagar Parikrama was the Indian Navy’s circumnavigation expedition aboard its sailing vessel INSV Tarini. Scroll.in’s 2018 account reports that the voyage began in September 2017 and returned to India in May 2018. The six officers aboard were skipper Vartika Joshi, Pratibha Jamwal, P. Swathi, S. Vijaya Devi, B. Aishwarya and Payal Gupta. The expedition was historic as the first circumnavigation of the world by an all-women Indian crew.
The reporting describes a journey of 254 days and more than 22,000 nautical miles. It also relays a Navy post giving a figure of more than 21,600 nautical miles in connection with training before the voyage; that training distance is distinct from the reported expedition distance. Scroll.in’s 2018 feature is an interview-based account, not a primary voyage log.
Where did the crew sail?
The reported route included five port calls: Fremantle, Lyttelton, Port Stanley, Cape Town and Port Louis. Between them, the crew crossed the Equator twice, crossed all longitudes and passed three major capes: Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. Together, those milestones convey the scale of the circumnavigation more clearly than a simple eastward or westward loop.

How did the officers prepare?
The crew trained for about three years. Their preparation began with classroom instruction and progressed to practical work aboard sailboats. Joshi told Scroll.in, “We started with some theoretical courses on navigation, communication, weather prediction,” describing the foundation before the more demanding work of handling a boat at sea.

- Navigation and communications: classroom learning prepared the officers to plot and manage a long-distance voyage.
- Weather: they learned to predict and respond to changing conditions.
- Sailing and repairs: practical training developed the skills to operate the vessel and address equipment problems.
- Emergencies and medical response: preparation covered situations in which the crew might have to manage without outside assistance.
Before Tarini was inducted, the officers trained aboard INSV Mhadei. That distinction matters: the voyage itself was the culmination of an extended preparation, not a first attempt at ocean sailing.
What was life like far from shore?
In their interviews, the officers recalled severe weather, equipment repairs, celebrations, marine life and luminous water. These are crew recollections rather than independent measurements of conditions. Joshi described a difficult South Pacific stretch, saying the seas were nearly nine to ten meters high and winds increased to 60–70 knots. Those figures are her reported recollection in the Scroll.in interview, not independently verified instrument readings.

Isolation made routine work and mutual reliance central to the experience. Joshi explained, “We were the only ones [there] for ourselves, there would be no help on the ocean where sometimes the nearest land was almost 1,000 nautical miles away.” The crew’s accounts also describe fixing equipment, marking occasions together and watching marine life, bioluminescence and the Southern Lights. These details show the voyage as both a technical undertaking and a shared life at sea.

In an India Today interview, Lt. Commander Aishwarya Boddapati reflected on discovering her own capacity: “The most important lesson I learnt during the voyage was that I was capable of doing things I didn’t know I could do.” Her statement captures a personal outcome of the expedition, not a substitute for its navigational achievement.

Joshi also recalled advice from her first captain to “keep your genders behind”. In the context of a demanding voyage, the phrase points to the crew’s focus on competence, discipline and working together. The significance of Navika Sagar Parikrama lies in both the milestone it completed and the preparation and teamwork that made it possible.
