Add Friend sends a request to someone; Accept approves a request they already sent you. You become Snapchat friends when both of you have added each other. Sending a request alone does not mean it has been accepted.
Add Friend vs Accept Friend at a glance

Snapchat defines friendship as the point when two Snapchatters add each other. Mutual friends can generally send Snaps and Chats, make calls, and view each other’s Stories subject to privacy settings. See Snapchat’s explanation of being friends.
What happens when you tap Add Friend?
You are starting the connection. You might find the person through search, Find Friends, your phone contacts, a Snapcode, a Story mention, or another discovery route. Tapping + Add sends the request, but it does not by itself make you mutual friends. The other person must accept or add you back, depending on how the request appears to them.

Snapchat’s former Quick Add feature is now called Find Friends. The screen and button labels can vary by device, account, and app version; Snapchat notes that its screens may look different on different devices. Its friend-adding guide covers current methods and interface examples.

What happens when you tap Accept?
Accept is for an incoming request: the other person has already added you, and you are approving the connection. Once the relationship is mutual, Snapchat’s friend features can include private Snaps and Chats, voice or video calls, a Friendship Profile, and Stories shared with friends.
Accepting does not grant unrestricted access to your account. Story audiences, contact permissions, and Snap Map location sharing have their own settings. A friend can see your location only if you share it with them through Snap Map. Public content may also be visible outside your friend list.

How to add or accept someone
Send a request on the mobile app
- Tap the magnifying-glass icon.
- Search for the person’s name or username.
- Check that you have the right account, then tap + Add.
You can also add people from contacts, Find Friends recommendations, Story mentions, or by scanning a Snapcode. On Snapchat for Web, sign in, open the Chat screen, select the person-with-plus icon, choose Add Friends, search, then select + Add. The ordinary Chat search may filter existing chats rather than find new friends.

- Open your profile or the Add Friends area.
- Look in Added Me for the request.
- Tap Accept beside the person you recognize and want to add.
Confirm the person appears as a friend in your interface. Labels and locations can differ across accounts and devices.

What does Pending mean?
Pending means the request has not become a mutual friendship. The recipient may not have accepted yet, but the status does not prove that they rejected you or even saw the request. A block, deleted account, adding limit, temporary restriction, or connection problem can also interfere with requests or make status confusing. Snapchat’s troubleshooting guidance identifies blocking, deleted accounts, friend limits, and adding people too quickly as possible causes when adding fails.
Accept, ignore, remove, or block?
- Accept if you recognize the person, have checked the account, and want to be mutual friends. Snapchat recommends connecting with people you know in real life; see its account safety guidance.
- Ignore if you do not want the request but do not need to cut off an existing connection. In the app, open Profile > Add Friends, tap the X beside the person under Added Me, then choose Ignore (labels may vary).
- Remove Friend if you are already friends and want to take the person off your Friends list without necessarily blocking them. Snapchat’s documented path is Chat screen > press and hold the person’s name > Manage Friendship > Remove Friend. Removal can end access to private Stories and Charms, but public content may remain visible and, depending on privacy settings, the person may still be able to contact you. - Block if you want to stop direct contact or feel unsafe. From Chat, press and hold the person’s name > Manage Friendship > Block. Blocking stops private Snaps and Chats and hides your location from that person, but may not hide public Stories or Spotlight content. See Snapchat’s blocking guide.
- Report spam, harassment, impersonation, or other potentially abusive conduct. Reporting alerts Snapchat; it is different from simply declining or removing a request.
Privacy and messaging exceptions
Do not assume that only mutual friends can ever contact you. Snapchat’s ordinary contact options include Friends and Friends and Contacts; saved phone contacts may be able to contact you before you are friends. Public-facing Creator or business accounts may have different options, and the old Everyone option is not generally available to ordinary accounts. Friend lists are private, and mutual-friend lists are optional and can be incomplete. Not seeing a mutual friend does not prove there are no shared connections. Snapchat also applies additional protections to teens; discoverability and requests involving teens can be limited or reviewed, with rules varying by account and region. A Public Profile follow or subscription is not the same as unrestricted mutual friendship.
If adding or messaging does not work
- Check your Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection and confirm the username is correct.
- If you cannot add the person, their account may have blocked you or been deleted.
- If you have added many people quickly, wait before trying again; repeated rapid attempts may trigger restrictions.
- Snapchat does not publish the exact friend-limit number in the cited help guidance. If you have reached a limit, remove inactive connections before retrying.
- If a deleted account still appears, sign out and back in. Retry only after checking the account state and connection rather than tapping Add repeatedly.
- If you accepted someone but cannot contact them, verify the request was accepted and that you are mutual friends; then check contact settings and whether either account has blocked, removed, or restricted the other.
For a request from an unfamiliar account, verify the username and identity rather than relying only on a recommendation or mutual-friend indicator. Ignore an unwanted request; block or report it if it appears unsafe.
