The accounts below distinguish a brief exit from leaving a production, and include disputed stories only with clear attribution. “Stormed off” is not an accurate description of every case.
What counts as walking off set?
This is a selective roundup, not a verified ranking or definitive list. It includes reported exits, temporary departures, and a few cases where an actor considered leaving or ended a production stint. Those outcomes are not interchangeable. Several accounts come through later interviews or secondary reporting, so the attribution matters.
Safety, consent, and representation concerns
Nicolas Cage — The Old Way
In a story recounted by SlashFilm, key grip Stu Brumbaugh said actor and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed fired rounds without warning on the set of the Western. Brumbaugh said Cage left after a second incident. This is a serious safety allegation reported secondhand in the feature; the account does not establish additional details about what happened afterward. SlashFilm
Emma Watson — This Is the End
A Tumblr user claiming to have been an extra alleged that Watson left because she objected to a scene. Seth Rogen later corrected that framing: he said the scene had changed substantially from what had been planned, Watson expressed concern, and they agreed she did not have to participate. Rogen wrote that Watson did not “storm off the set.” The account supports an agreed decision not to do the changed scene, not a confirmed angry walkout. IndieWire

Native American actors — The Ridiculous Six
The Washington Post reported that nearly a dozen Native American actors and a cultural adviser left the set after objecting to portrayals they considered insulting and inaccurate. Actor Loren Anthony said the depictions insulted Native women and elders and misrepresented Apache culture. Allison Young said producers responded to concerns by saying they could leave if they were too sensitive. Netflix characterized the film as broad satire. This was a group departure tied to representation concerns, not simply a celebrity dispute. The Washington Post
Leaving during a difficult or heated filming moment
Carl Weathers — Rocky IV
SlashFilm reports that Weathers ran off the set after Dolph Lundgren forcefully punched him during a take. The feature says filming stopped for four days. The account describes a reaction to a physical incident during filming; it does not establish that Weathers left the production permanently. SlashFilm

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio — The Abyss
During a resuscitation scene, Ed Harris was slapping Mastrantonio after the camera ran out of film, and the performers were not told. SlashFilm recounts that Mastrantonio reacted, “We are not animals!” and left. The story is attributed to Harris’s interview with Entertainment Weekly; it is a reported departure from that scene’s circumstances, not evidence that she quit the film. SlashFilm
Joaquin Phoenix — Her and Joker
Scarlett Johansson recalled on the Armchair Expert podcast that Phoenix left the set during an intimate phone-sex scene in Her. SlashFilm also describes departures during Joker filming, attributing those accounts to director Todd Phillips. The available accounts do not establish one shared reason for all the exits, so they should not be collapsed into a single walkout story. SlashFilm

Temporary exits after conflict or frustration
Patrick Stewart — Star Trek: The Next Generation
In his memoir Making It So, Stewart wrote that his castmates laughed when he said they were not on set to have fun. He recalled: “I didn’t enjoy being laughed at. I stormed off the set and into my trailer, slamming the door.” His account is explicit about a temporary exit to his trailer, not leaving the series. SlashFilm
Diana Rigg — Game of Thrones
SlashFilm recounts an anecdote from Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon, relaying Jessica Henwick’s recollection that Rigg declared herself done for the day after delivering lines before the crew had finished setup and then being asked for a close-up. It is described as ending her work for that day, not quitting the production. SlashFilm

Frankie Muniz — Malcolm in the Middle
Muniz said he walked off because he was upset that people were afraid to challenge “certain people” whom he described as controlling, rude, or disrespectful. He did not identify those people in the cited report. He also said there were two episodes he was not in, but The Independent noted that his character appears in every episode, sometimes through archival footage; the claim should not be restated as a confirmed absence from two broadcast episodes. The Independent
Chevy Chase — Community
SlashFilm reports that Chase walked off during recurring tensions with creator Dan Harmon. The cited summary does not establish the precise disagreement behind a particular departure, so it would be speculation to assign one specific motive. SlashFilm

Considering leaving, or leaving the production
Gene Hackman — The French Connection
SlashFilm says Hackman quit the production two days in after struggling with the intensity of the role and director William Friedkin’s deliberate provocation. The feature also says Hackman continued to leave the set when scenes became heated. The account therefore describes both a reported early attempt to quit and later temporary exits; they should not be treated as one event. SlashFilm
Ian McKellen — The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
SlashFilm describes McKellen breaking down while filming alone against green screens and questioning whether he wanted to continue under those conditions. The cast helped him refocus, and he stayed for the remaining films. This is a reported moment of distress and contemplated departure, not a confirmed storm-off. SlashFilm
James Caan — Nailed
SlashFilm says Caan left the production after disagreeing with director David O. Russell over whether a character could choke and cough in the same scene. Caan reportedly declined a proposed compromise to film both versions. This account concerns leaving the project, rather than taking a short break from a set. SlashFilm
Teri Garr — Star Trek: The Original Series
SlashFilm reports that Garr left after Gene Roddenberry wanted her skirt shortened. This detail comes through a secondary feature, and the cited account does not establish more about the circumstances or aftermath. SlashFilm

A disputed departure
Sharon Stone — A Golden Boy
A director’s account, as reported by SlashFilm, said Stone left amid photographers and a television camera. Her representatives denied that she stormed off. Because the accounts conflict, the incident should be treated as disputed rather than settled fact. SlashFilm
